nah no other missed post. i only have room for a double or 2 single breakers left in my panel at the current time. read its best not to tap off a leg for 120v.

i dont have a 220v welder right now, only 110v so maybe i should just go that route and run a 10/3 for the future?

They make space-saver breakers that serve as two breakers in one slot, thereby freeing up space in the panel if you replace pairs of existing breakers with tandem breakers.

Example: Square D Homeline 2-20 Amp Single-Pole Tandem Circuit Breaker-HOMT2020CP - The Home Depot

Yeah if you hop up to the multimatic 220 you get AC TIG and high frequency start but it literally doubles the cost of the machine. For my uses DC lift arc TIG is enough, realistically I use it for mig 99% of the time but like being able to play with TIG when I feel like it. Pretty much everything I do is steel so it wasn't worth the extra $1.5k to me for when I MIGHT need to weld some aluminum. If I get into that situation in the future I'll probably pick up a dynasty as a dedicated TIG machine.

    Cool. Noted.

So far everything I do is steel, not all that heavy, and entirely as a hobby. Prices to step up to the nice machines are eye watering when it's just a hobby though.

Yep, I too was surprised when I found out they existed. Opens up possibilities on a crowded panel.

Yeah it definitely will. With those i can split my outdoor outlets to its own, 2 runs to the garage and probably a 240v

    Reserected from the dead.
    Please elaborate.

Are you saying you only have 2 slots left in your panel?

I'd run a sub panel to the garage.

    Correct.

My garage is only 20ft from the panel. Just through the basement wall

For what it is worth our techs called those throw away`s

Outside of warranty just make it a paper weight .

If your going to use it once in a great while it might work for what you want

Thanks guys. I don’t do a lot of aluminum work and would like to eventually get a dedicated tig with ac/dc but I’m not good at tig to start with. The spool gun would be for light work mostly and to dip my feet into sheet metal work. For 300 bucks may get the 100 amp one and see how it goes

I would gladly take a 30A over the lower end spool guns even though I really don`t care for spool guns .

We seem to have gotten quite a few having impact damage so they do tend to cause frustration.

There Ok for small jobs once in a great while when it is not practical to upgrade to a machine with a Push pull system which would be my go to move .

What I did is install a 100amp breaker in the Main panel to the Sub panel in the Shop Now I can have 240AC and 120vac in the shop.

Have breakers close at hand to shut off electric plus the disconnects at the machines .

I would need to work pretty hard to draw the total of my electric service all at once .

As long as you know going in these spool guns were designed for the entry level hobby market

What causes problems is the purchasing agent buying by price and being clueless and then some crew at a outage gets this new setup and it fails after a few hours.

When we first got Electric in the House in the late sixties we had a 60 amp service and a 200 amp service in the Milk House.

    I can relate

Is there a spool gun on the market that’s more than “entry level”? I’m not doing fabwork/welding full time but I consider what I do more than the average hobbyist. Tig is the ultimate plan but I still have to learn to weld with it proficiently before I considered tackling a project with it
