The first generation Tundra had many similarities with the older Toyota T100 and the compact Toyota Tacoma. These included the shared use of a 3.4 L V6 engine which was the top of the line engine in both the Tacoma and T100. The V6 engine would serve as the base engine for the Tundra, while a second engine was added, a 4.7 L V8, the first V8 for a Toyota pickup.

Toyota will do something...eventually. But it won't be until the 4th Gen and it will absolutely not be a V8 or diesel.

A hybrid: Turbo I4 for rear diff and electric motor to drive front diff as needed?

It would be dope but I can’t see them doing it. Not in this age of fuel economy and environmental standards.

I could see them going the turbo V6 route at best, but definitely not a V8.

They won't put a turbo on petrol truck. Toyota sells a ton of hybrids and has pretty much perfected it. Most hybrids/ev's on the planet. Turbos aren't as reliable as a hybrid system either.

Even an I4 diesel would be kick-ass. I believe the 4 cylinder diesel in the Hilux has significantly more torque than the 3.5 in the Taco. Plus, great fuel economy. I think US emissions standards will keep that from ever happening, though.

I think VW messed that up for us. EPA is going to salty about approving new diesels from here on out.

I'd rather have the I4 hybrid from the Highlander than a V8.

Not gonna happen. V8's are almost dead - even in fullsize trucks. And Toyota is likely working on a hybrid/electric Taco, not cramming in a dying platform from a bygone era.

The V8 hope is as absurd as the diesel nonsense. It's not happening.

They have a truck test mule already, it's just a matter of when not if.

Heres a Tacoma with a Lexus V8 rowing thru the gears !!! . Now who wouldn't have a big grin on their face rowing thru the gears if Toyota did offer a V8

Are we supposed to be able to hear it over the terrible music?

Personally, I'm never in a big enough hurry to need to get to the next light just to sit and wait there or get up to 75 a few seconds faster.

    Hard pass for me.

I was responding to the bolded. A v8 Tacoma is not happening. Ever. The only question is how much longer there is an IC option.

The 4th gen will be an overcomplicated, underpowered hybrid that us 3rd gen people will laugh at.
