Yeah I’ve read mixed things...they make both a flush and overlapping stair nose for floating floor. I’ve also read that nailing down the one piece of flooring at the top of the stairs is okay because the hallway is narrow so expansion would be negligible and it can always expand in the other direction.

I’m afraid that the stair noses that overlap the flooring might be a trip hazard at the top of the steps because they stick up overtop the flooring a bit

I do remodeling for a living, and I'd personally not recommend laminate flooring to cap the stairs. Basically for all the reasons you've mentioned. There really is no good answer for a stairs solution. I usually leave it up to the customer's budget and preference regarding refinishing/replacing, etc. They make solid wood "kits" to cap stairs if refinishing isn't an option.

One last note, I hope your laminate is a solid synthetic core. If not, I'll give you a heads up that anything with an MDF core will be ruined and swell like a sponge with any amount of water/drink spilled on it. Sadly the cheap versions sold at home stores are junk, and grossly overmarketed.

Yeah it’s an mdf/plywood/bamboo laminate. Fortunately it’ll be in bedrooms, so I’m not terribly concerned about water damage. I am planning on making a custom stair nose to mate up to this out of oak because it needs to be solid and be able to take a beating. Gonna be a bit tricky to do

Spent about 20 minutes on Saturday sharpening my 1” chisel now it cuts so well I forgot what it felt like to have a sharp chisel. Made some cutouts for PT 2x4 to sit on the fence line between PT 4x4. Took about 3/8” out for the toenailed horizontal pieces but forgot to think ahead and ended up with two styles of privacy fencing. Hopefully it’s not too noticeable to folks walking along the street.

I am renewing my home office. I got tired of the little girls wallpaper that has been in here since I moved into the place.

Here is what's left of it behind a new desk I put together for my wife. She doesn't use the computer much.

I couldn't paint without replacing the drywall so I got some self adhesive wallpaper to go over it. Rocks and log walls.

    My desk.

I made some pine stained shelves to match.

I added a LED strip around the 8 foot level but thought I could make it better.

I ripped some of the 1 x 6 pine down to 1 1/2" and put a groove toward the front. The I cut acrylic light panels at 1 3/4" to cover the LEDs.

I didn't use a level when I installed the LEDs so I will need to clean that up but it did clean up the transition to paint.

It's not much as far as woodworking but sometimes cheap pine is better than melamine or other materials.

    One wall to go.

Hey guys, just bought my first Tacoma last week and found this forum. I love that this thread was started in 2013. Anyway, I’m a woodworker so I thought I’d share some work. I’ve been making these wavy flags lately and they’re a lot of fun. Solid Douglas fir (laminated 2x4) and spray paint.

Thanks! I basically glue a bunch of 2x4s together into a big block, then I use a series of attachments on my angle grinder to power carve the waves. The first attachment is sort of a cupped-spikey wheel by Kutzall. From there I use a 2” random orbital sanding attachment by Arbortech to reach all the concave parts, and my 5” random orbital with a contour pad to sand the rest. Sanding takes an eternity while the carving usually only takes an hour. Painting is pretty straight forward. I lay down a vinyl sticker of the union and paint blue over it, then painstakingly remove the stickers. Stripes are just done with painters tape.

I’m assuming the vac system helps keep it clean, I’ve never seen a wood shop that clean.
