How old were your old tires?

If you've got rope or a strap wrap that around the front, then measure it laid out flat. Do the same with the rear tire. Mark the difference and let us know

I lied. The tires are the same size (265/70/R16) but not manufacturer. The 2 front ones are Goodyear Wranglers and the Rear are Provider Entrada A/T

Here are the pictures I got about 3-4in difference between front and rear...

I do fail to see how it is a big issue considering they are matching on front and matching on rear. I will research to get more edumacated tho.

For every turn of the axles, the front of the truck is trying to go 3-4" further forward than the back of the truck, which is a long way for something that is rigid, so it puts stress on the whole drivetrain. Apparently, input for the front diff is the weakest link, so it let go after a while.

It's an issue because the transfer case does not have a differential: the front and rear output shafts always spin at the same speed in 4wd.

When your tire sizes are different from front to rear and you're in 4wd the front diff input and rear diff input are spinning at different RPMs while you cruise. The transfer case isn't capable of accommodating that. That creates binding and puts a lot of strain on the transfer case and differentials

Thank you guys.... Really, y'all have saved me thousands of dollars I'm sure.
If either of you are in North Texas I'd like to buy you a round of beers.

What is the next step for me? Besides 2 new tires lol.

Will I need a new transmission? Is the tcase salvageable since it's not actually cracked or exploded? Lol
I know I will probably have to get a new rack and pinion

I appreciate recommendations on places to buy parts

I'd start by draining the t case and seeing what comes out.

So having the mismatched tires front/back became an issue when he put it in 4wd for such a long way, right? In 2wd it wouldn't have mattered ya?

Well, see I used to think that too but then I was told that would only matter if you had a locked diff. The open differential would allow for you to run mismatched rear tires without ruining anything, or so I was corrected the last time I mentioned that.

I dunno, when I didn't have a matching spare I put it up front just to be safe and drove a few hundred miles that way. No issue except for a wonky pull in the direction of the mismatched tire. I wasn't in 4wd then of course, though I did run it in 4wd that way on the trail for a couple days without issue. But I think the loose ground makes up for it.

Point being....always carry a matching spare and avoid the headache entirely lol

Correct, in 2wd the front driveshaft is not spinning due to ADD.

I think the front diff is done too, tore the input shaft right out of it.

I think a donor truck is gonna be the easiest. Maybe post up in the dfw thread and see if anyone knows any good parts places for tacos there.

Also this is a good lesson in how the same tire size can vary greatly between different brands and even models between the same brand.
