You heavy on the gas pedal? Keep your RPM’s as low as possible driving in the city. I’d manage to get 19 in the city on my brothers 3rd Gen cause I’m a really slow accelerator.

No heavier on the gas than your normal driver. I drive the flow of traffic! The lower I keep the RPMs the worse the fuel mileage is, if I keep them around 1700-2000 and in S mode I can get 16.5-17.8 mpg

For what its worth.. I drive in "D" and during the last cold spell with below zero temps (I live in MN) my truck was getting 16-18 dependent on wind. The last couple of days since it has warmed up into the low 40s I've been getting 20-22 easily and my truck seems to run 100 times better. Even this afternoon with temps in the upper 40s and with a 25 mile drive, mostly freeway at 65-70 mph I got 23.9 mpg on the display when I turned the engine off.

edit.. I have been using 91 non-ethanol fuel and using Michelin Defender tires in 265/75-16

Hey OP, you realize S mode is a gear limiter?

You’re not shifting gears with it.

i think you also get less gas mileage than advertised if you are 4x4 too

That could be part of it. Keeping up with the flow of traffic. As I’ve read on these pages, Tacoma’s like to go a little slower. My last pickup would do about the same at 65 as 75. Tacoma, not so much. I drive mostly rural two lane highways, so speed limits of 55 and 65. I’m setting cruise at 60 and 68 (instead of 70). Acceleration like I want to get somewhere but not hard on it. I’ve seen a hand calculated 18-19 thus far. It’s gotten a bit better, especially with the warming weather. I’m at nearly 6500 miles. That mileage includes the massive cold spell we’ve had, snow and ice, warming for 5-10 min some days before I leave, etc. Tank averages have ranged from 16.6 to 21.7, but overall average in the 18s. I’m pretty content with it, I’d be tickled to death if it would get 19-20, but I also have a load in the back constantly since it’s my work pickup. Currently 5500#, and have yet to add the topper. Might top out at 5800-6000 when it’s all said and done, not for sure.

lets face it....you got suckered into buying a $40k vehicle that has really strange shift patterns in order to save gas but doesn't accomplish anything other than making you the slowest gal on the street......oh well....at least its got great payload....i kid, i kid.......in all seriousness tho.....after 4 - 5k in mods and aftermarket tuning packages you should be good to go.... welcome to TW!..... you're gonna love it!!

I have slowed down to maximize gas mileage since I got my Tacoma, and that's not a bad thing. Dropping your speed 10 miles an hour on a commute might add 5-10 minutes to your drive time, but it is a much more pleasant - and probably safer - drive.

Its exactly what i got the other day in the S5 mode at those rpm around 50-55 mph. Truck will eat more gas than if just left in a the D mode at those same speeds, plus rpm with be around 1400-1500.

I’m getting 19.5 on my ‘21 Sport with 5K miles. That’s with a 2” level in the front, 265/70R16 tires, and removed front air dam. I’d consider myself a moderate driver. I don’t baby it and I don’t accelerate like I’m in a drag race. I just got the OV Tune last night so we’ll see if there’s any changes. If there are I’m guessing it’ll be minimal.

All Tacoma owners should check the units for volume in their center displays. Mine somehow came from the dealer set to imperial gallons, not US gallons, making me believe I was getting better gas mileage than I really was. Anyone getting higher than 20 mpg unless you’re constantly cruising at 50-55 mph I’d be suspect about your indicated mileage.

Is the "Average Fuel Economy", the mpg for the life of the vehicle? Can that be reset?

For everyone thinking I drive in 4x4 I do NOT. I have been driving country roads the past week, temps have been in the mid 40s doing about 55-60, in D mode I get 13, in S mode I get 16.5-17.8 in two wheel drive with a tail wind! Sounds like my truck has an issue if you all are getting in the 20's even the guy in MN. It goes in for it's first service in 700 miles.

If going by the calculated mpg on the cluster I am only getting ~15-16, mostly city driving. The last time I got 22+ was the day I drove her home from the dealer. I have not gotten any higher than 21 mpg even on long trips. I usually use cruise control on the freeway and set my speed to the speed limit or 5 over. I have gotten use to the slower side of driving and am mainly driving on the middle or right lane. People in a rush can use the passing lane to go faster.

The MPG of these trucks are REALLY dependent on how you drive, I've found. If I actually watch how I drive, I can routinely get 20+ MPG around town. I can also just as easily get garbage mileage.

    Welcome to toyota.

I have gotten 15-17 on avg in the city and 14 on the highway. It all depends on how you drive and what mods you have. I have a lift, armor, larger tires, OVTune for power and Im always doing 80mph or more on the highway.
