check your settings I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re on imperial gallons and you’re really only getting 16-17 miles per US gallon. These trucks fuel efficiency is trash. Great truck though I still love it

I believe the only accurate measure is by manual calculation. I took delivery on 12/11/20 and my mpg each fill up is:

    16.2
    18.8
    16.4
    19.2
    17.2
    18.5
    17.7
    18.5

When my Nissan Xterra was new it did 18-20, so I am a little disappointed, but hoping that as the engine breaks in more and summer fuel comes on line it will do better. Incidentally, my Tacoma is a 6MT and that is combined city/hwy driving with spirited acceleration and shifting.

Also it’s comical that people want to blame today’s gas prices on the current administration. They shut down construction of a pipeline that wasn’t even in operation and somehow that changes the supply of oil? How about the freeze in Texas where half of our oil is produced?

Lots of factors at play. I'm also from Michigan. I just got 20 MPG on my way to work yesterday at 70 MPH. What are your tire pressures at? Hilly or flat terrain? I can tell you these definitely get better MPG in the summer (I'll get 23 in the summer at 70). Not only winter gas, but colder temps force the ECU to use more fuel, particularly before the truck is warmed up. But a couple things to note too:

Comparing an Eco-DIESEL to a gas powered V6 is like comparing apples to oranges. Small diesels are always going to have better MPG. The Duramax in the Canyon/Colorado is rated for 28 highway and often gets higher. Gas has more horsepower and diesel has more torque. If you aren't towing, diesels (especially small ones) are capable of incredible MPG compared to their gas counterparts.

Also, you may have learned this already, but since I didn't see it mentioned I will also note that S-Mode is not "sport" mode or "manual" mode. All it does is limit the range of gears the truck will use. Example: If you're at a stop light and you're in S2, you're still in 1st gear, not 2nd. If you leave it there, it merely means the truck won't shift past 2nd and is free to use 1st and 2nd.

Do you always purchase the fuel for you truck at the same location?

If you use the app "pure gas" it will show you where you can purchase non-ethanol fuel.

You may want to try this and see what happens.

As was mentioned by others.. the ECU on this truck has significant implications on extremely cold
weather engine performance and fuel economy. When it was -10 to -25f, my truck felt like the emergency brake was on while driving, kept the transmission from shifting into 6th at times and felt like it was gutless with zero torque if I encountered any hills or significant wind. All this has changed with temps in the 40F range now and has provided me with some confidence that I can get the MPGs listed on the window sticker, at least during normal temp ranges.

Freeze and oil supply speculation both are contributing to a rise in prices.

I put 3500ish miles a month on my work pickup. If not more. So there’s a limit to sacrificing getting somewhere for efficiency. Tacoma may just be like my Powerstroke. Generally limit speed to about 68 when speed limit is 65. I’m good if it’ll do 18-19 mpg. That’s really what I hoped it would do.

I am indeed seeing this. That’s part of why I specifically got a MT, you can smash the gas all you want but it’s not shifting gears any until I tell it to. That’s why I believe the Ranger I shod horses out of years ago got near 20 mpg.

All my mileages are hand calculated. Surprisingly the computer isn’t too far off most of the time. As mentioned, you might do better if you can find non ethanol gas. I’ve had pickups that it didn’t matter what you put in it, and others that it made a 20-30% difference on E10. I’m experimenting with the Tacoma. Switching back and forth every couple thousand miles for a while and will do an average for each. If there’s enough difference it justifies the added cost of non ethanol fuel.

We find with our 2019 OR that avoiding using cruise control when the road is anything but almost perfectly flat helps quite a bit. As others have said all the downshifting takes a toll. Just got back from a 2300 mile round trip from MA to SC. Cruise averaged around 19 or so. No cruise averaged about 21. And the no cruise was in the hillier parts of the trip. All driving at a pretty high (for me) average speed of 75 mph. Kind of unavoidable to drive this speed on I95 or I81. Running our 245/75R-16 BRIDGESTONE BLIZZAK winter tires.

It's interesting reading through this thread because I thought the 3rd gen would get better MPG than a 2nd gen? (V6 DC 4x4) If you drive like an old lady then it seems it will just barely. When my truck was stock I got 20-21 on the hwy at 75+ mph. 16 when mostly in town. Seems about what I'm seeing for "normal" driving which includes some full throttle to pass idiots and have some fun. Its about 1mpg less now with bigger tires and added weight. I've driven the 3rd gens and I can see if you stay out of the throttle it will cruise up through the gears nicely and stay in 6th gear. If you start rolling into the throttle it's hunting for gears which will hurt MPG for sure. I still prefer the 4.0L and 5AT. It just feels more solid and has more low end torque. I guess that where the ECT comes in or S mode? I dont have to do that unless I'm towing. Sorry just had to mention that. ;)

Wow fuck me did Toyota actually manage to make the new gen less fuel efficient? I understand it makes more power, but it should be clear to all the industry players that if you’re not offering a diesel, in any sized truck, the gas engines need to be downsized and boosted. Why is only Ford truly realizing this?

These trucks are horrible when it comes to gas mileage, but I didn't buy it thinking I was going to get good gas mileage.

I bought it expecting to get rated efficiency, because I’ve gotten rated efficiency on all of my past 5 vehicles, including 1 first gen v6 PreRunner Tacoma. I got better highway mileage with that lunker than I do with my new one. My driving habits have not changed, but it seems the standards for EPA testing have.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
Girl you're comparing apples to anal beads.

Tbh, this entire thread is useless because nobody knows your driving habits or the roads in your area enough to diagnose your issue. My best advice is- start tracking your mileage methodically. Get a notebook and keep a log for six months. Only having the truck for one season is not giving you an accurate representation of its performance.

Maybe a few other places too like Trinidad who knows. Originated from Britain so that’s why I used that name to explain to the guy who’s never heard of Imperial gallon
