I searched high and low for a higher voltage regulator to swap into my alternator for better AGM charging, the diode mod isn't ideal and monthly trickle charging has become annoying. I didn't find one however I did find a vehicle with the 2TR in another market that comes with a 130 amp alternator. This alternator regulator has the same voltage output as ours, not the best for AGM battery charging, however it’s a newer design and potentially had a different selection of regulators to swap for a higher voltage output. I found a regulator with advertised 14.5v that seemed to have the correct circuit so I took the chance and pulled the trigger. I installed it today and I measure 14.4v at the battery :D

The 130 amp alternator is a little larger than the 80 amp and so it has a third mount, installing over and sharing a bolt with the tensioner.

To swap the regulator, first remove the three cover nuts and the plastic cover easily pops right off.

Remove these four screws, at least one is different so remember from where you pulled each one.

Lift the brush assembly straight up. Straighten a paperclip and insert it to hold the brushes back for installation later.

Heat the solder on the regulator pin and once fluid lift the regulator up and off.

Place the new regulator and screw into place, positioning the tab on the post.

Crimp the tab to the post and solder.

Drop the brush assembly into place, screw it down and pull the paper clip.

Reinstall the cover and three nuts, that's it!

I’m running solar on my truck so that keeps my battery topped off at 14.2v. If I didn’t want to swap regulators bc of this, should it be a bolt on upgrade?

why would you do this as opposed to swapping the fuse under the hood method?

I did, I was taking a chance so trying to minimize cost. It saves about $30 without a core, I doubt they'll accept our stock alternator as core

I just started wondering today if this would be compatible with the URD blower since it sits behind that bracket. I will probably still give it a try whenever the time comes but i think itll need a different bolt at a minimum

That doesn't sound like it will work, both needing to be in same location.

This is a really cool write up.

Got me wondering, I changed to a red top optima last week in my 2004 Tacoma. All stock equipment.

At a low idle (auto trans in drive), I am still reading 14.26 volts on my Fluke.

I didn't have any electrical loads turned on other than the radio, so maybe that is the difference.

Changing that alternator doesn't look to be fun,,, kinda looks like some hoses (radiator) need to be moved out of the way, but that is another story.

Heads up if you're planning on supercharging your truck with the URD kit in the future, this one likely wont work. I was looking at the bracket for the SC and it doesnt look like any larger alternator would fit. Not much room to spare on the blower bracket. just something to be aware of

porbably gonna keep her stock! Might throw some of those LCE headers in though. Pretty good upgrade?
