Fluid Film limitation

Been using FF for about 4-5 years now each fall. I have been a walking commercial for this product as I believe it works. But after so many years and build up it is flaking off on some surfaces and collecting crap at the cracks - like poor quality undercoating. This has occurred only on surfaces that get warm:
The rear differential / axle housing and some of the brake backing plates. In my case these surfaces need to have the loose fluid film removed and replaced. Hoping most will come off with the pressure wash in the spring or I'll have to wire brush/scrape.

But on the frame and underbody sheet metal - still a mushy , sticky mess - just the way I want it.

 

I'm not sold on Fluid Film.
Now days, seems like it's the only commercially applied substance.

This is a totally different type of product; Fluid Film, Wool Wax, et al, are meant to prevent rust by providing a barrier between metal and the environment; this, on the other hand is meant to treat metal that has already corroded.

 

You are 50% correct in that fluid film does protect and Coroseal is for metals that are already rusted.
Coroseal converts iron oxide into it's inert form, Magnetite, which protects the steel beneath.

Fair - my point being that FF is for use on non-oxidised metal, while the Corroseal is for use on oxidised metal. In other words, diligent application of the former will hopefully negate the requirement for the latter.

 

Lila, can it be sprayed or is it too thick?

Wool wax is way better than fluid film (I've used both)

 

Coroseal has the viscosity of heavy cream. Sprays well by cup gun at 30psi.
Will work in hand held automotive pump sprayers.

 

Yes, I used a electric backpack sprayer and paint brushes to spread it out AND the warmer the easier it is to apply and a gallon will do about 2 trucks I did my Taco and my T4R I had at the time and turned out really good

 

I'm old school.
FF is too much farking around, having to apply it every year.
A good old thin coat of rubber based undercoat, then a second coat.
Do it once, and be done with it.
Problem is, no one does it anymore, except the "under body" only.

 

Your right the rubberized coating is awesome, until water gets in through a crack and is stuck in there. There is a reason no one is doing it, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Frame rails should not be boxed and enclosed full length. they should have open areas for water and debris to drain, and get hosed out.
"C" channel was the best frame design, and just as, or more rigid.
Anymore the frames are made so cheaply, they build strength by boxing them in, which gives the water places to stay.

 

My father always sprayed and brushed his van with waste oil. He’d lay a disposable tarp on the floor and commence making a mess of biblical proportions. lol... hey, even oily, greasy cast iron won’t rust...

 

Maybe for the area YOU live. Our region doesn't live with salt on the roads all the time.
Different uses and applications for different regions.

 

I use FF but give my truck a booster shot a couple of times a year with some of the $2 per can, Dollar General WD-40 type stuff. I can do it laying on a creeper, in my garage. It's not a big event, just fifteen minutes or so to touch things up. I spray all my suspension components too.
Fluid Film is good stuff but it sounds like an 'event' for many here, to have it applied.
Years ago, I used WD-40 and now even Liquid Wrench rust inhibitor, etc. Anything is better than nothing, ecept that rubberized crap. I don't care what anyone says, there's way too much information out there warning against it. I've seen a few videos on YT that show the damage it can do to frames in the rust belt.
