the ambiguity is the point of my post.

 

But it's not ambiguous.. the division symbol means 60 over 5 times the difference of 7 minus 5. It reads just fine

 

Thats effectively what I did. My calculator just showed extra parens when it mashed it all onto one line.

But 6 is what my brain said too. Division comes after multiplication, which is a hack to make up for poor equation writing.

 

Oh I know, I've used enough scientific calculators to understand why yours filled in that extra set. I just posted mine because mine writes the equation out the way the symbol is intended

7-5=2 done first
left to right
60/5=12
12*2=24

I grew up on this stuff as a youngster. Once you get it. Everything else is easy.
