No need to put it on the paint, but I suppose you probably could. Several people spray it in their doors and rocker panels too, in addition to the bottom of the truck.

What do you use to spray it on?

i lived in the rust belt for over 45 years and have had over 30 cars & trucks, and i just sprayed them off when i could and gotten the salt off and never had issues, drive it an enjoy it otherwise why have a truck when you can go out and enjoy it in the snow? undercoat it or fluid film and don't worry about it...

Nice layer of car wax, some mothballs inside and under the hood to keep the mice away and yes...fluid film on frame, undercarriage and ofcourse disconnect the battery or put it on a trickle charger. I'd also get a cover if truck is outside!

Why not? I’m living back in Ontario Canada now and I use FluidFilm on the door frames, inner doors, underside, inside door and body cavities, engine bay, gas tank door, etc (pretty much everywhere except for on the brakes, belts or exhaust)............I even spray it on some interior parts like seat anchor bolts, seat tracks and in the jack storage area.
I wash most of it off the painted areas in the spring but when the fall comes around, I’ll spray it all over again.

OP, just drive and enjoy your truck all year. IMO, if you want to protect it and keep it free from rust, you can’t use too much FF.

If I lived in the rust belt I'd own a beater car for winter commuting. Garage the Tacoma except for when you really need it, and then wash it promptly before putting it back in the garage.

There are a couple of different methods. Some people buy an entire spray gun system. I just bought a 6 pack of aerosol cans on Amazon and that got the job done for me. But it just depends how much you want to cover. I didn't go inside the rocker panels or doors.

I did. The entire point in products like Fluid Film is to keep the salt off of the metal, which would speed up oxidation. Your post implied to do nothing all winter and just wash it before it gets warm. I can tell you from experience that that does not work well. Even regular washing alone can only do so much to mitigate the problem. Where I'm at, you're doing very well if you don't have any rust on a 10 year old vehicle.

I have a few spray cans and figured they wouldn't go far. YouTube videos galore show the spray gun method. I wasn't looking for that kind of investment. I think I'll buy a gallon and put some in a former Simple Green spray bottle. Probably have carpal tunnel problems when I'm done but it should go away.

I love you guys who keep saying garage it in the winter if you live in the rust belt. I live in the rust belt and half the reason I bought my taco was the benefits it gives while driving in the winter. Now if you have unlimited money do what you like I’ll keep doing fluid film and driving my taco 365 and smiling while I do it.

If you're not going to get the spray gun don't buy a gallon. Just use the spray cans. 5 should be enough to cover the truck. You can get a wand to put on the end of the can so you can get inside the boxed sections of the frame.

Even in storage, rust will still happen.

You can't avoid it. You can only slow its progress.

Frankly, I'd sell the other ride. Use the money to pay down any loans, CC debt or invest it. The insurance $$ could be used as "fun" money.

Simple green is a good prep step, but it's not a protectant.

Guys come on, If you really live in a salt mind area, I don't care how much fluid film, undercoat, green coating or oil you spray on your truck. The salt will break it down. YOU can not spray everywhere, there are always missed area's. I have lived here in upstate NY for 55 years. I have tried and done it all. Best solution, [[if you really like your truck.]] DON'T DRIVE IT IN THE WINTER WHERE THEY USE SALT. Just being honest... Mine is in my warm shop waiting till april.

you've (we) have invested 35,000+ in a vehicle... invest in protecting it for 140.00. comes with a gallon of fluid film (enough for 2 coats, protecting for 2 years), spray gun, wands etc... when you buy the spray bomb cans, they are 10 bucks a piece. to do the tail gate, doors, hood, it takes me 4 spray bomb cans... then you still have to do the back side of all panels, rockers, floor, frame, suspension. when you buy the kit, you have a pro spray gun that will last you your lifetime, and every other year buy 40-50 of fluid film in the gallon cans.

or dont bitch when, your truck at 2-5 years looks like a 15 year old beater. I never understood paying tens of thousands for something, then not spending a hundred bucks, and some time, to make it last, have better longevity, and resale. it is like snowmobilers buying the latest and greatest sled, and bitching about a 50-200 trail permit. Just to add to this for everyone talking about FF and spray guns; not everyone has the proper area to apply this stuff nor the space to keep the equipment afterward. And some people don’t want to deal with all that extra work.

I just get Krown. Same idea, small investment toward longevity.
I’m sure we’ve all seen the difference between rust protected vehicles and not protected vehicles to know it’s a smart thing to do. NO MATTER which method you go about doing it.
Rust protection [in general] matters if you care about the longevity of any vehicle.
