Diy seat jackers

Some of us holier than thou folks are actually licensed engineers. The OP's design has short comings due to the welding of square tube. Any time you have a 90 degree angle it will contain high stress and is susceptible too breaking. Ideally the best setup (if one must modify) is a one piece design with smooth radius corners.

 

And I'm one of them non-educated engineers, aka;

Engineers are worse than manual guys. They take any opportunity to tell everyone how smart they are. I’m surprised it’s not added to the title card.

I would include fabricators in that as well. All are engineers in my opinion.

Engineers take an oath to uphold public safety. Trying to pass on knowledge to those who haven't been exposed to different things

If I wanted to jack up the front of my seats, I would just make my own. Like I've said at least twice, I do agree there are some design flaws and things that could be better. I just don't see the death trap that the so called experts are seeing.

 

It's fashionable these days to mock competence. It beats the hell out of actually working to attain it! I'm an engineer too, but I'm not going to say what I think about this. For my usual fee, I'll give you a report. Best of luck!

 

It's fashionable these days to assume that if someone don't have a piece of paper in a frame that says "I C-minused my way through college...yay me" that they don't know anything.

 

Specializing is for insects. I am a generalist. I have worked my butt off to have a good general knowledge of most subjects that interest me, or I believe will be useful to me.

For example, I volunteered to sweep and clean after work at a man who built race cars shop. In exchange I got knowledge.

To live on a submarine you have to learn every system, how and why it works, and be able to explain it to the people who were trained on it.

I have worked as a diesel mechanic, auto mechanic, rv mechanic, hvac tech, plumbers helper, oddly enough licensed investment broker, (miserable job), service advisor, owned my own business building saltwater reef aquariums, and the systems that maintain them, and cleaning them, now I rent and repair heavy equipment and aerial equipment, and sold for Toyota.

I say all that to say this.

Please consider that if a bunch of random folk say hey thats probably not a good idea, its probably not a good idea.

You should give the process a try before you so expertly critique it. Any engineer who C minuses their way through school will end up stocking the bean isle at Safeway. These days the gateway to most real engineering jobs begins at the masters and PhD level, and you had better be in the top 10% from a good school. That being said, any engineer knows that the education is the tool set required, and real competence comes from a life long curiosity about how things work and a dedication to understanding that. Engineering is a practice of humility, because blow hards end up killing people. That is why I used the word "competence" and not "education". The commonality is hard work and persistence. These days so much information is available for free that people (like wrightme43) can become extremely competent if they have the will to do it. The attainment of competence, wherever I find it, is something I respect. Competence is what keeps planes flying and cars from destabilizing and tumbling down the road. Most people just take all of this for granted. More importantly, I don't profess to have competence in an area where I have exercised none of this effort. I listen to, and respect the voices who have. A lot of really competent people have offered their suggestions in this thread. Their concerns are valid. Instead of dissing that, you might consider how lucky you are to have access to that depth by just logging into a silly website.

I appreciate and learn from a lot of people here, and I consider myself to be a pretty smart guy. I have a lot of respect for JimmyH, for instance, because he demonstrates his competence here daily. I don't always agree with him, but I will never disrespect him. I've learned things from him. I have no idea what his background is, but competent people can generally recognize it in others. I see Jimmy get pissed on all the time for trying to share what he knows. A little respect for people like this is not too much to ask.

I know it sounds like I'm picking on you jp, but this is really intended for a much broader audience. I don't think you are an idiot. I apologize for giving you the brunt of my frustration.

But can you ride a bike with no handlebars? I think maybe the “ engineers“ at least some of them get no respect in the real world so they come here and feel the need the post all of their exaggerated accomplishments that nobody cares about so all of us lowly peasants understand that they know more about some stupid seat risers than we do.

 

When I go to a medical specialist about an issue I'm having, I don't consider myself a "peasant". I'm damn glad to listen to someone who has put in the time to know what they are talking about. Respecting people who know more does not make anyone a peasant, and if you notice, all of the advice offered here by experienced people has been very respectful. Disrespecting knowledgeable people does not mark you as a peasant either. THAT marks you as an idiot.

 

I've read quite a few posts about seat risers, "and wont tell you to take this off and spend $50 on some real ones." I thought about making some from rubber hockey pucks. My motorcycle accident was October 2018. I was in a coma. Woke up and required a wheelchair for 6 months because of fractured pelvis. Insurance asked for my proof of ownership for the motorcycle which burned when the bike exploded. Case has yet to be settled. Don't give insurance companies any reason to delay their responsibility in the event of a crash.

 

Oh man you sure told me lol. As soon as this went up people started telling him how stupid he was and how smart they are because they ride on a sub or build a fish tank or whatever it was and that’s why he should listen. That’s not respectful and THAT marks you as an asshole.

 

Part of the disconnect that comes in these conversations is from the way that people look at a situation. Most people would look at this bracket and think "yeah, I could sit on that and bounce up and down and be fine, so what is the problem?". Engineers know that is not how things break. Most failures are not caused by overwhelming static loads. Engineers instinctively look at things from the standpoint of dynamic loads and the effects of fatigue. This is where "common sense" begins to reach it's limit. Anyone who has taken a course in dynamics remembers just how un-intuitive that class was! Most failures are the result of these two factors, and in some cases more complicated matters such as harmonics come into play. What is obvious to an engineer may not be obvious to a lay person. Trust me, the competent people in this thread are cringing at the thought of how that bracket could fail. That is why aeronautical engineers design planes, and the rest of us can sleep while we ride in them.
