Is there a break in period on the motor? 500 1,000 miles before you can get on it and push the RPM's.

I always break it in like you are going to drive it after the breakin, some say break it in hard and it will run hard, I don't know about that.

There is actually something in the Manual about the break in period. I would have to read it again, But I think for like 1st 100 miles its said don't brake hard and it may be 1st 500 miles drive it easy. I forget, but I know it did say in the manual about it.

I love the motoman break in for a bike, but bikes dont have a differential. From what I understand, you want to be easy on the rear diff for a while.

I have a new 2011 Tacoma. In my Owners Manual, in the back of the book, in the Alphabetical Index I looked up Break-in. This referred me to page 136. This page gives a list of break-in tips. Also on page 229 there is a break-in schedule for trailer towing. If you don't have the owners manual or this information is not in your book I will be happy to print here what my book says. I did follow these break-in procedures with my truck. I think there must be some reason for them.

I just took it easy for the first 2,000 miles to be on the safe side. Many say that modern engines don't need an elaborate break-in period since that happens at the factory. But, I'd rather just be gentle in the beginning for peace of mind since I plan on keeping my truck for a long time.

I took it easy for the first 500 miles then changed the oil and started to drive normally. So far so good at 18K. The 2.7L engine has a lot of pull and revs up fast. This is one of the nicest 4 cyl engines I have ever owned.

sadly, I've only put Husky Liners in it thus far - tend to blow all my cash on my bikes and guitars.
I babied mine until it hit 1500 miles, then I dropped the oil to check for flaking and to put in Mobil that I ALWAYS run in my vehicles.
After that, good to go.......but I don't follow the 5000 mile oil change recommendations from Toyota........I change mine every 3500-4000 just for peace of mind, but to each his own on that.......congrats on the new purchase!!!

I have been babying mine so far. I still accelerate but no red lining. I think its easy for 500 then drive normal and after 1000 hammer down.

Ok just got off the phone with a Toyota dealership. I was asking them about TRD exhaust installation and parts. The guy told me that the newer Taco's do not have a break in period.

Usually the break-in/no towing is more about the rear axle than the engine. I flew to Charlotte, NC when I bought mine, and took mostly 2-lane roads driving back to Memphis (600 miles including Tail of the Dragon), mainly just to vary rpm rather than constant rpm on the interstate. Seven years later, no problems, never had to add a drop of oil.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Knew a kid that built a 454 for his 67 RS SS and hammered it immediately. Thirty five years later... still hammering it.

I would look at the owner's manual and see if a break-in procedure is required.

For a rebuilt motor (or any motor that is not run-in at the factory), I would drive it normally for the first 500 miles, not going easy but not redlining it either. Then after 500 miles, I would make sure everything is at full operating temperature, then I would hammer it 3-4 times all the way to redline, in gear (not in neutral/park), allowing the engine to slow the truck after every pull. I understand this engine deceleration is an important part of the break-in procedure. Then I would call it broken in.

Also, this thread may hold the record for most time between posts #13-14.

5-1/2 year old thread wake up.

    Amazing.

    Zombie threads rising @Jimmyh :infantry:

    Ok

But yet you use that concept. You accept it works for your feather foot, but not that it would work for a lead foot. Where's the logic in that?

Ive heard you need to let it break in for 500-1000 miles to allow the metal in the cam shaft to harden up because it is softer prior to break in. I could be wrong, just what i heard
