What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Have had a manual Painless solenoid (flip switch, send power to secondary battery) for several years now. It worked fine but just sent whatever the alternator decided it had to give which is not necessarily what the 2nd battery wants at any given time. Now that I have an expensive Battleborn LiFePo battery as my 2nd I decided I want to treat it well and so got a Victron DC-to-DC converter (big blue box on the left - small blue box on the right is my solar controller).


Now when I am driving between adventures it massages the power coming from the alternator to give the battleborn exactly the volts and amps it wants to keep it in tip top shape. I even see it getting the battery into absorption and float modes on longer drives.

And, Yes, I will clean up the wiring, just wanted to get it working before figuring out routing.

Replaced the old Magnaflow with a new one and added a Vibrant resonator. With 120K and 10.5 years of service, the old muffler was very blown out.

Compared to before? It is very, very quiet now. Almost too quiet.

But overall, much better. You'll have to judge for yourself on whether it sounds good or not.

 

You don't really hear about it as much, but then again this is a Tacoma forum...I did talk to a guy that owned a shop up in Tahoe a couple years ago that owned a 3rd gen 4runner and he mentioned its frame was swiss cheese. I don't think Toyota ever did a frame replacement program on the T4Rs though unless I've just never heard about it.

 

Well it looks very nicely done, something satisfying about the bump out around the shock haha. Glad you like it still, your MF will wear in again and get louder.

 

They aren't made in the US and the QC and quality of steel and manufacturing in Japan is monitored closely by Toyota, I don't think they have near the same issue as our Dana built US recycled trash frames do.

Don't worry it will, my LC has gotten downright annoying over the course of 2 years.

 

It definitely will. When I got a new muffler, I had the same feelings on it. That it was a bit too quiet. But after about 3 months or so it had a much better sound to it.

 

From inside the cab is different I think. From outside, that big 6 sounds pretty good to me.

 

Well I just recall when I installed the MF years ago (going from OEM) I was thrilled with the sound and this time seems different but this time it was very loud after the upstream cat delete plus being blown out.

 

Yea the cat definitely has a large roll in the sound in my experience. When I replaced my OEM one with a magnaflow CA compliant one, I was actually surprised at how much it changed the sound and tone of it. OEM was definitely quieter

 

Right on man. I passed on it. Looking at a black one tomorrow. I have always digged the black on black look

 

It'll be way better though because you piped it out the back. So won't be nearly as freaking resonant in the cab. You'll get to enjoy the tunes a lot better because of that.

 

Yeah, as well as all the creaks and groans and rattles.

 

Went and checked on it... and put another spare transfer case in storage.
