So we talk about what we would like to see happen with the Tacoma right? Well, while this is a Honda and not a Toyota, this is where the industry is heading, like it or not.
I'm not publishing this link to get your opinion but to inform you of fact. Happy reading and... you might learn something to boot!

Regardless of opinion, this is some amazing tech. They still need to figure out how to overcome weather tho.

I think everyone has known this since we were kids. It was just a question of when.

Yeah, when Tesla released the tech they did years ago, I was amazed.

Today with, this; it's no different(in terms of how astounding it is). They continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, and we continue to see things become more and more standard that were only the concepts of sci fi in years past. Pretty damn cool.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
While I may not have foreseen this, I did order my '21 TRD OR AC AT with the absolute minimum technology package. I get the safety aspects of the newest technology, but I fear how it's going to diminish the skill level of younger drivers. Even more concerning is how this will push the cost of vehicles ever so much higher. Just check the price of a replacement side view mirror on a full tech Camry. Vehicles have gotten much better than the 1969 Nova SS I bought new for ~$3.5K, but my '21 Taco went out the door for around $38K. It's certainly better from a safety perspective, and more reliable (I hope), but maintenance costs have grown proportionally higher as well.
Thankfully I'm old school and I am not likely to see what things will be like 2 decades from now.

Who cares if you think you're "informing us" and don't want our opinion. Where the hell you think this is??? This is Tacoma World. On a Friday. With a stupid thread starter. Self driving is all bullshit that gets in the way of driving. If you don't like driving get on a frigging bus or call a taxi. If you're too stupid to actually drive and pay attention - get on a bus or take a taxi. The existing nanny crap is stupid and completely annoying and not at all helpful. If it can't be deleted then I will keep rebuilding older vehicles that work and allow the owner to choose how to drive. That stupid shit would never allow you to drive across a stream, over a pair of logs crossing a ditch, choose a random direction in the sand dunes, and it sure won't like doing donuts in an snowy field. Bunch of stupid crap.

    Check build thread!
I hope what happens is we have a choice. I love driving. Don't get me wrong. But if my 96 year old WWII Vet grandfather could get himself to the library and back without needing to walk/drive, so he can get a new book when he wants, I would be very happy indeed....

The only part of self driving cars that seems like a bonus is fewer drunk drivers. As a reliable feature I could turn on and off as I see fit it's cool. Can you imagine how much damage and heartache could be avoided if people could fall into their seat, press a button, pass out and wake up in their driveway.

Guess what happens after self driving becomes standard?

    Self off-roading. :cookiemonster:

Imagine the choices you'll have. You can either ride along for the thrill, or you can sit at camp, drink your beer, and watch your truck in the distance do it's thing.

I just worry how much dependence we get on the car to drive itself that we don't know how to deal with it when things go haywire. For example, if the lines go a different way for construction zones or something, etc and suddenly the operators can't handle driving the car themselves

The boundary pushing is legality. Tesla's have so much more programming in them than what the users can access, but it's locked out because it's not legal to use it on the roads. The tech is all there, the hardware and software is all there, it's just not opened. (Some stuff might not be on the cars, but is certainly programmed and ready to roll out to the cars once they get a green light).

If it doesn't hover, I don't care. I was told we would have hover cars at some point.

I would be down with my wife's car having this self driving tech, she is a terrible driver. Trust me, you want her to have it too.

You joke - but here's a real potential scenario.

I get up. I get ready for work. I get in my car, I hit the "work" button, I sit back and read the newspaper. I get to work and park in the parking lot and get dropped off at the front door. My car, electric, now drives away and finds an open parking spot. In that parking spot is an induction charging pad. It charges for 20 minutes until it's full, and then drives away to a parking spot and can shut down and let other cars charge. Oh, that parking spot could be right outside OR it could be 3 miles away, the car and parking lots all talk to each other in terms of parking availability. I work all day, and at 5 I go out and get my car get in my car at the front door, since at 4:42 it was networked with all the other cars and parking lots and knows who is leaving when and at what time it needed to leave to get to my office building in time for departure.

Uber - same way, the car drives itself and after 24 passengers it's down to 25% battery so it drives to an induction coil up to 85% for a few minutes, and then drives away to pick up my drunk ass from the bar and take me home.
