How did you like the Duratracs overall?

I'm planning to get the 4Runner Pro wheels and was looking at this exact size in C-load. On paper they hit a bunch of what I'm looking for: aggressive looking, reasonable weight, and white lettering. They're 100% overkill for me but oh well.

I ran a set of Duratracs on my '10 and I went pretty much everywhere in 2wd. I drove home from Farmtown on 133 & 106 in a big storm (with a conservative guess of 6-8 inches of standing snow on the roads) in 2wd with them. So for snow, they're out-f*cking-standing. But be ready for some road noise. They're not Super Swamper loud, but they do tend to hum.

Any other parts of the state get that crazy black ice last night? Besides the Portland / i295 corridor area? That shit was insane. Almost did a couple of 360s on 295 in Freeport going like 40

Going to happen again tonight. Major freeze. The only chance is the high winds to dry things out before it collects

At least the thawing, freezing, thawing, freezing, etc of the gravel road I live on gives me a chance to use crawl control.

@Scott17818 I saw your post about the RSI cap. I was thinking about selling my leer for it. Just to give me more clearance over the decked box. I'd love to check it out if you order one. I'd probably pick mine up at MLO unless someone is discounting them.

Thermometer is on a pogo stick for the rest of the week, it looks like. Should be great for the roads.

Hi all, my girlfriend just got a 2004 Tacoma SR5 TRD with 141k and I've been fixing it up a bit for her. Done quite a bit of mechanic stuff so far, but it has a leaking steering rack.

We live in the Bangor area, and have only been around for a year or so. Any recommendations for mechanics in the area? It also needs some body work done (rear well rust). Found a guy (Alternative Auto Body) in Bangor that can weld in a new panel for around 1k...

You found the thread! As mentioned in the other thread by another member, check out the frame really well before you put any money into the truck. Make sure it is solid or maybe has been replaced as part of their frame replacement campaign. Some owners did not pay attention and their trucks did not get seen before the deadline for frame replacement ended. If your truck falls into this category then you may have a very big problem that you do not know about. Check the areas listed in the diagram in your exhaust thread.

I once bought a fantastic 1972 BMW 2002 for a great price that was in GREAT condition....until I discovered that the previous owner had wet newspaper applied in the wheel wells, then let the newspaper dry, then coated it with undercoating so it looked solid and great...until I prodded it with a screwdriver!

EDIT: Just read in the other thread that the new frame was installed in 2014. PHEW! Now just clean it and fluid film it! Good job getting one with a new frame!

Post some pics of that rust so we can see how bad it is... 1k sounds about right from a body shop but there may be cheaper alternatives. Like ACEkraut mentioned there are all kinds of redneck quick fix options that people do but also looking into a whole new bed from a junk yard could be cheaper for an 04.

I’ll get some pics up tomorrow. The body shop guy mentioned finding a new bed and called the salvage yards he knew but didn’t come up with anything. He also offered a fiberglass fix but that seems too short term. Hoping to keep this truck for a while. Thanks for the welcome! Learned a ton from this site in the past week. Coming from a mechanical background of light maintenance on a subaru impreza (spark plugs, belts, a CV axle once...) so I’m hoping to do more DIY stuff on the tacoma and gain some skills.

Man thats a crazy story. The sale of this truck was a bit odd... the bed was full of trash and the guy said it was a condition of buying the truck... almost walked away at that moment but everything else checked out lol

I am new too tacoma ownership as well (used to ride chevys) and have learned a lot here over the last few months. This forum is a bank of knowledge. If alternative auto is going to cut off the rust and weld on new wheel wells for 1k you are definitely not getting a bad deal. I semi recently went through a similar thing on my old silverado and was quoted $1,100 to replace the rocker panels. Ended up giving the truck away but wishing I had done it right the first time after filling the holes with spray foam and covering with bondo/truck bed liner.

Considering your truck has a newish frame and you want to keep it for a while I definitely agree that having it done right is the move. Also I recommend getting it undercoated. Just had mine done by Rust check for under $200 and they are originally from Canada so I trust it is good product. Believe there is one in bangor.
