IMO, easiest thing to do is head to Autozone and just order a pre-assembled CV axle replacement. It costs $70 after you return your old one, has a lifetime warranty, and saves a lot of time over disassembling to replace a boot.

Edit: I just flipped to the last page of this thread before posting that. Clearly, people already covered this. My bad!

You dont say Captain Obvious? This is an early first generation Tacoma (1995/96/97 model) not a 01-04 model.

My guess would be aftermarket mod.

And I believe it is Commander, not Captain, Obvious. Please use the proper form of address.

I had the same problem. I lubed the release spring and topped off the brake fluid, not sure which helped, but it's gone. Are there 2 springs in this setup though? Cause mine is right in the middle about at the back of the transmission, and you can clearly see the cable "Y" off to each rear wheel... I didn't see anything on the side of the frame.... Or I guess the 5 lug setup could be different, although I don't know why they'd change that...

Anyway, I replaced a water pump I believe (It was actually the dealer we bought it from that did it, it was like 3 days after we brought her home) That's it. I had an electrical problem that I caused with trailer wiring, and I set off my ABS light using a Scanguage, I dented my rear bumper... Hmm it seems like I'm trying to kill this thing but she won't die. But seriously most of the issues with it have been stuff I caused. I've got 80k and the way I see it I'm about 1/10 through my truck's life.

thanks but no I used it correctly. You must have never heard of him. Its "Captain Obvious". Think superhero type...Captain America, Captain Marvel, Captain Nemo, Captain Obvious. So yeah I used the proper form of address. Not sure what you are talking about.

Yes, yes, of course, I am familiar with the concept. However, the individual you were responding to holds a specific position:

It just comes naturally for some people. Sensitive types face certain peril in here.

Well, since you obviously lack the ability to form a rational thought, I will explain what commander obvious was trying to say when you interrupted him with your idiocy.

He was trying to say that TRDracing5 got the white gauges from a STOCK 01-04.

So, maybe you can stop being a douche and let the big people carry on a thread.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm torn on which gen to get. The 1st gen is less cash and more reliable. The 2nd gen is newer, looks freakin badass, but much more cash and more risk of something going wrong (even though the risk is minimal).

I've been driving a modded out DSM (97 Mitsu Eclipse) for the last 6 years and I'm tired of wrenching and worrying about whats going to give out next. Tired of having to concentrate on my gauges cause something could go at any second. So I'm ready to turn it into more of a dedicated track car. And I can tow it with a taco!

So I want a nice daily that I don't have to do anything to! Except regular maintenance of course. I'm leaning towards a 2nd gen since I've really wanted one ever since they came out. And just by riding in my friends 06 I love it. Also there aren't many 1st gen for sale around here.

    1) Emergency Brake Cable (dealer mechanic whipser) that it's a POS they replace often.

    2) O2 Sensors.....both had to be replaced and reset for check engine light (big $$$'s). It even challenged the dealer to figure it out!! Don't even think about leaving your gas cap loose as the check engine light will stay on for a week or more.

    3) Frame ROT. If you live anywhere but the southwest, you know what I'm talking about. Toyota can't seem to make undercoating paint that stays put on a vehicle. I assume they've got this fixed?

    4) Seat belts springs do not retract. This happened when the truck was about 2 years old.

Other than that, the trucks are great and the other stuff is just nit picking. The frame ROT issue is HUGE though. Even the Chevy S-10, one of the WORST trucks ever made, has zero issues with frame rot.
