I was thinking it was some sort of sure seam or tyvek seam tape, seems kinda pointless if you aren't wrapping corners though.

It's seam tape. My guess is extra protection from highway speeds to prevent the wrap (if any) from coming loose. Sometimes just wrap isn't enough.

Plus keeping rain/water out.

My wife said her arm was sore from both shots. After the 2nd one she said she felt a little fatigued for a couple of days. Doctor told her that's normal and a good thing. It means your immune system is reacting to it....which is what you want
