How to Drain/Refill Automatic Transmission

Actually, I only have 57K on the odometer so I suspect that's right on par with the revised interval of 60K for the transmission change I saw on this thread. I never towed anything or off-road so I expect it to be relatively clean, but may be surprised either way. Like others though, I always thought changing the transmission fluid lead to problems before long and typically shyed away from it. However, I'm curious if nothing else to see what it looks like compared to the new fluid.

 

That crossed my mine as well, but doesn't make sense if it leads to transmission problems down the road that result in pay outs by the factory warranty. I realize it's a numbers game either way and figure that it's perfectly OK (functionality/etc) to be down a quart or Toyota would otherwise fill it to the brim.

 

As I understand it - a trans flush-exchange is what to avoid as it stirs and loosens up crap which then clogs valves. A drain and fill is preferred as it does not loosen up any debris and add fresh additives. I would rather be safe then sorry so I would go for 30,000 but 60 is a lot better then 90 or 120.

 

That makes sense, but there may still be a risk even if it's small.

 

Just read through the factory manaul I downloaded off TTORA and it appears to have this exact procedure in it. Just without the helpfull pictures and video. It tells you which terminals to jumper on the OBD and to allow 1.5 seconds in between shifts while doing the 6 shifts between N to D. Thanks for the pictures, video, and extra detail.

The Toyota manual is 95% correct. If you read a little more closely, the manual describes the "D" (drive) indicator will illuminate when the correct temperature is reached. In actual fact however, the "AT TEMP" light will illuminate - rather than the "D" (as described in the manual).

 

Thanks for the clarification. So Toyota recommends a flush at 60K. Now does that mean a complete flush of the system are just what you describe above? I am 62K. I did see a how-to on how to completely flush the entire system but I am not up for that now. But I did go ahead and buy the oil for the process you describe.

I don't know if those links will last very long. Every time I posted links to the FSM I got a slap on the wrist from the site admin/mods - hence why there is no reference to them in the write up.

Allot of dealerships don't even own a flush machine, therefore I suspect a drain and fill will suffice.

 

great write up, did it today, so far so good followed the directions to the T and took about an hour. Thanks my tranny is much happier.

 

I saw someone post earlier that their 06 prerunner had a AT TEMP light. mine doesn't when i tried it today

 

make sure that you jump the right ports on your OBD II and when you do it, you need to do it kinda quick it does not light up when you turn your key on, only when you enter the temp mode, it took me 2 times to get it to work because i went to slow the first time.

 

Just checked my 2wd auto - AT TEMP does not illuminate when the key is turned to the ON position.

 

nor will it, you need to put the truck into temp mode for it to light up, you will not see it by just turning the key on. It only comes on with the ports jumped, and your in temp mode.

 

what a great piece of information, Planning on doing mine really soon. Atleast I know it will get down I don't trust dealers anymore. What about the filter anyone drop there pan to see what is inside for a filter???? Couldn't hurt to clean the pan and magnet off in there either

Well I finially got my ws fluid and crushwashers from TOYOTA. Bought a case of fluid at $8.00 qt The whole procedure went fine until I removed the fill plug on the side of the trans and the threads came out with the plug. OH shit now what? Anyone else have this happen??? Only thing I can think of is to get it HELIcoiled hopefully with the trans in the truck. Aluminum threads and aluminum plug BAD idea.
