Any idea how much it will cost if we have to upgrade? Vs waiting to buy

 

If RSI charges anything, it will be minimal. Don't let that be a reason to not get a cap now.

*Third Brake Light Wiring Harnesses

For everyone that is asking and/or posting about the third brake light harnesses, there was apparently a batch of bad or incorrect harnesses being included from the RSI factory. It's not all of them, but some. Most Tacoma cap owners have installed the wiring harness without incident. We believe the that issue has only recently popped up with the incorrect harnesses. We have been able to very quickly deal with these third brake light problems as they arise by reporting the issue to RSI and RSI will immediately ship out the correct harness.

 

FWIW my DCLB EVO did not have a harness included. I emailed OA and they setup a warranty claim with RSI. Six days later I received a harness and it works. Best in class customer service if you ask me.

 

Is there a way to visually identify the incorrect harnesses? I installed my cap last night and the third brake light didn't function. Was planning to troubleshoot today. The included harness meters out ok but I guess that wouldn't matter if it was pinned incorrectly.

 

It's the one in the box labeled "third brake light harness".

Anxiously awaiting my RSI SmartCap! After adding a dog and moving to the PNW from SoCal, I need something above and beyond what my SoftTopper can offer - NOT a knock on the SoftTopper but my needs have changed. I have put that thing through hell over the past two years and it's still going strong.

I tried to order through RSI direct. I never received any confirmation but there was a pending charge on my CC. After two days I reached out to RSI to inquire but never received a response. However the pending charge disappeared. Then I did some more research on where to buy an RSI SmartCap. Enter @OffroadAlliance.com ...

First off - nice website, seems to be fairly standard issue parts and prices for the most part, but they had the RSI. I ordered through them and I think within the next 24hrs I had an e-mail from A HUMAN to me about my order. I responded asking for specifics on the delivery of my SmartCap and ANOTHER HUMAN responded that day with an update. Holy crap...best customer service experience so far. That wins my business, 100% of the time. Next time I'm shopping for Taco parts, I'm going with Off-road Alliance first.

Where I failed was adequately planning to install a RTT. I have some old round Yakima load bars but not with the foot packs to install on an RSI. Also I couldn't find details on load bar installations so I am hesitant to buy anything right now. I've seen some Baja and Prisnu racks on these things, but if I don't need to drop that kind of $$ I will try and use the load bars that I have and source the right feet for them.

 

Finally got my cap assembled and installed. As for the load bars I went for the RSI ones at least for now:

 

Super stoked to get my tracking number for the RSI cap. should be here on the 11th and I'll post pictures once I get it installed.

Anyone know what the height is from the truckbed to the roof of the cap?

 

Pro-tip - If you are assembling and installing one of these at home, pre-plan on where you closest cardboard recycling center is so you can dispose of it as soon as you are done. They understandably come with a LOT of shipping materials (plus a double wide pallet that isn’t shown)

Finally got the Yakima HD rack set up. FYI, 60” bars clear the windoors.

 

Just got my inexpensive new-to-me roof top tent installed. I have since replaced the red straps from the previous owner with some beefier ones. The Smartcap is pretty stout.
