Anyone know of campsites near Smith Rock State Park? Something little more secluded than the park’s lot of Sprinter vans.

If you don’t mind a bit of a drive the chimney rock area on the Crooked River is awesome and there are a half dozen cool, cheap campgrounds right on the river.

Looks like it’s about 30 miles

Also got my salt air fix this weekend. No Steelhead, but when you get sunny days in February, you enjoy that shit!

I know it’s late notice, but I think me & the fam are going to go poke around Gifford Pinchot on the west side to see what’s accessible right now. Just an excuse to get out and drive a little. Let me know if anyone else has a free Saturday.

It was fun. Ran into snow too deep to want to do solo with the kids around 2,000 feet. Spent the day finding dead ends, but damn it’s beautiful out there, and we just scratched the surface.

I need a sanity/morality check. One of my favorite vantage points got dumped on last year. Someone dropped a trailer load of what looks like a bathroom demo; broken mirror chunks, some drywall, cabinet looking material. They also left a pair of recliners. Based on the pile not containing a bunch of insulation or plastics I think they were planning on having a trash fire while smoking meth in their clapped out recliners (we found some sort of freebase pipe in the trash). It's more than I want to try and bag and haul. I try to actively improve places and pack out others shit regularly. The scope of this is too great and feels tragic.

If I get up there early while the mountains are green, would I be a bad person for burning it all. I've got a ton of dry scrap wood. I could get a blaze going then just pitchfork their dump pile onto the fire. I know ideal would be to pack it and take it to the dump. This is a lot of sharps and who knows what else I that pile, it's also a trailer load. I kind of want to clense it with fire then take the remains out.

My dad would burn anything and my mother hated it. It was a solid source of family friction. Am I good to help restore a place by burning a dump site? (Obviously being safe with fire around the woods)

appreciate your enthusiasm for cleaning it up but I don’t think a trash fire is the solution here (and I love a good trash fire). Most of the stuff you listed won’t burn -glass and drywall. Not to mention all the nails and fasteners that are inevitably in the trash. I think a fire would just make it even messier and more of a pain to haul out.
