Odd question: the dash crossmember - is that is that oxidation, or a brownish paint? Genuinely curious.

 

Ha! That’s rust, pull out your dash and you’d be appalled. Toyota doesn’t pay up to paint metal that can’t be seen

That’s one from an 02’ going into a 96’. Behind the dash is kind of a wasteland.

 

Pretty standard in the auto industry. Out of all the vehicles owners out there, how many you think ever take a peek behind there. Hell, most have never seen there undercarriage

 

To be fair the 02’ donor truck had a tree land lengthwise on it and the windshield was in pretty tough shape so it had a little help getting some patina. If I remember right the 96’ had some patches of rust though.

Got a new toy to play with. My buddy bought this new last year and needed to get rid of it, I've never welded before ever, but figured it's never too late to learn

I can proficiently glue steel and aluminum projects together.

 

If you've managed to glue steel and aluminum together I'd definitely be intrigued

 

I bought a Eastwood 135 and use flux core on it and built this for my truck the other day. It’s a frame for a sleep platform. It’s been fun and frustrating learning how to weld.

 

My platform has succumbed to water seeping in and time to redo it. I never thought about doing a steel frame. Perfect thing to practice with

 

Yeah I plan on putting some seals down under and on top of the plastic bed caps and up front. I just used whatever was already on the cap when I got it used


Also saw someone on here mention that those slots are exactly an inch deep and one inch square tube is perfect and well it is.

Introducing myself, Danny. I'll be moving back up to the PNW in a couple weeks near Olympia. Lived in Puyallup 10+ years ago so excited to go back. Been in the desert between then and now (Phoenix, Vegas, etc).

Speaking of that, are there any permits normally to go offroad/ camp? Like I said, I'm used to desert/ high desert camping. Drive out there, stay on the road, set up camp, no permits generally.

No better time to show off the setup below than now! Ice fishing/ camping in high country Nevada in 8° weather.
