I've been drinking Sierra Nevada pale ale for 17 years it's probably my favorite beer ever it goes good with any food anytime of the day and I have some good robust seasonal brews. A couple years ago a friend of mine and I rode our motorcycles from Sparks Nevada all the way to Chico California where the breweries located the ambient temperature was about 60°, but going over Donner summit that was over 20 ft of snowpack and it was in the single digits it was cold as fuck, we made it down to the valley and then it opened up and the temperature was like in the mid 80s we wrote all the way to the brewery just to have a fresh beer man that was a good time Sierra Nevada makes a good beer I hope that brewery never bellies up

On a 5 wt your reel is essentially just a line holder. Unless you hook a monster trout or accidentally snag a steelhead you’ll find that 90% of the time you won’t use your drag system. So don’t buy that custom painted Abel as your first reel (I mean you can... power to you). Redington is a phenomenal budget brand so I’d recommend any reel from them.

If you’re hooking yourself in the back just take the fly off. Tie a knot in the end of your leader and crimp a small piece of split shot (start with size BB) above the knot for practice  You’ll get it eventually!

I second this. Coming from somebody with 19 fly rods, a 5 wt reel is pretty hard to go wrong. All my trout/bass reels (3wt-7wt) are all Lamsons of varying degrees and ages. I think one of the best reels for the money right now is the Lamson Remix. Pretty affordable too. Once you get into 8wt and beyond for salmon/steelhead/saltwater trips then spending the cash on a much better reel is worth it.

If any of you guys have fly fishing gear questions just ask, I worked in the fly world for a decade +

I always tell my friends that want to start fly fishing that getting an Echo rod and something like a redington or Lamson reels are good quality mid level products. If they work and you like fishing with them you will eventually get better stuff as you go. It’s every bit as much of a money pit as being a Tacoma owner.

Agree with all of this. I got back into it a few years ago and started with an Orvis Clearwater bundle...loke less than 300 for rod, reel and line. Still catch lots of fish on it.

Also make sure you follow the fly fishing B.S. thread here on tacomaworld!

Those are expensive for having that much damage! I've pretty much stopped buying stuff 2nd hand during the pandemic. You can get most things cheaper brand new!

People get impatient and want it now so they are willing to over spend. Bicycles, home audio, home furniture and lots of car stuff is doing very well. People who are working from home and not eating out and drinking Starbucks everyday have found they have lots more money to blow on things that make them happy.

Moving soon, time to start clearing out the garage:

Free 2nd gen cab mount chop plates, been sitting in my garage for 5 years, time to admit I’m never getting around to this mod
    556260CE-CD5F-4934-808A-3C0574CFFE57.jpg

Also, free Hilift chain winch accessory. Never pulled out a stuck truck, but this proved useful at yanking out small trees around my yard. Also includes a length of chain (not pictured), maybe 20’ ? I forget.

Also, anyone interested in these camper lifting frames I built? They’re sized for my custom camper, but probably fit a Vagabond Drifter or similar camper. Can’t take these things with me, hoping to just install a gantry crane in my next garage :welder:. Or you could chop them up and use the steel for another project, the main beams are 2x3 1/8th wall and the upright sleeves are 4x4 1/8th wall

Would you still recommend those for a beginner? My uncle got me an Orvis card for xmas a few years ago for some unknown reason and I think I finally have something to spend it on.

I tried Tenkara (as part of a work promotion) and it wasn’t really for me. I just assume get a 3wt rod if you are targeting lil’ guys.

Orvis makes great stuff. Just like most things, their really good rods are pretty expensive, but they still have great staples like the Battenkill reel. The Orvis Hydros is a great reel at the price point.
