Looking for fuel type suggestions

    Any suggestions on the type of fuel I should run in my 2011 TRD Sport DC. The book tells me to run minimum 87 octane fuel, which is regular fuel; however, it also says that for optimal running no lower than 91 octane.

    Is it worth it for fuel economy/performance to run the more expensive premium fuel?

    Thoughts?

    Run whatever you want.

    Try all of them and see what you like. It won't hurt anything.

    Generally, you'll get slighly better gas mileage with higher octane gas. HOWEVER - is it worth it? You need to figure out COST PER MILE for each to get a real comparison. Make your own judgements.

    Higher octanes can help prevent pinging & lugging under torque load (like traveling in mountaneos areas or towing,hauling, etc). If your truck pings a lot, try a higher octane.

    Always medium grade or better here, depends on the season. (medium oct-winter, higher oct-summer)

    Never the cheap low grade any more, tried it twice and it pinged relentlessly.

    Thanks for the input. I think I will go with higher octane to start and then stick with medium grade or better.

    Did you know there is more chemical energy in the lower octane fuel? So in theory you could get better MPG from it.

    I did some testing with my 2005 XRunner before I put the URD Supercharger on it.

    Did some MPG testing. I found that I got a very slightly better MPG with reg over premium fuel. It was very close, but once you factor in the cost, reg is the way to go.

    Did some dyno testing. NO DIFFERENCE ON THE DYNO between reg and premium fuel. I know that is a mind blower right there.

    Another thing to consider is that higher octane burns slower and it leaves more combustion deposits behind like carbon and so on. I know the advertisements try to convince you that the higher octane more expensive fuel is cleaner for your engine, it is not, not at all.

    Run your own tests and decide what is best for you and your truck, but don't automatically by into the hype that premium is better....

    I just did a highway trip, one that I have done several times previously. This time I used Premium instead of Regular. The truck did seem to run slightly better but did get slightly worse mileage. (1/2 MPG or so) Next time I will try the mid grade.

    getting there....
    in my 04.....i run 89 or better..........or i'll alternate between 89 and 93 octane. my truck runs better with it as far as im concerned....and its not that much more expensive here. what sucks is the ethanol in the gas today. that shit kills mpg's pretty bad.

    It's not new, it's not Mexico
    The 2010 owner's manual says "select octane rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher." So:
    Use the lowest pump octane number that your truck can run on without knocking/pinging under normal driving conditions (for me that's 87).
    Octane numbers are only a measure of a motor fuel's anti-knock property. A higher octane number does not burn hotter so it can not produce more power. High octane fuels are for high compression engines, and it's the higher compression ratios that produce more horse power. Premium gasoline doesn't burn cleaner, have better additives, or "make your truck happier". Our trucks, V6 and 4 bangers, should be able to run properly on regular grade gasoline.
