    A thing or two...
Didn't see any burn marks that would indicate that it arc welded itself in place. I think it's more a combo of being over tightened initially and age. The manufactured date on the ozonator is 12/09, so I doubt the wiring has been touched in a decade.

    Home improvement you say..

In the last 5 years, in no particular order, we have done: replaced shingles with metal roofing, remodeled our bathroom (down to studs and back), blown in insulation in walls and attic, new hot water heater, eco scaped our front yard, rebuilt fence in back yard using metal pipe instead of 4x4s.

We dont have any formal experience in construction , just a can do attitude and a willingness to work. All projects done by us, and the help of a friend or 2.

Your kind words are greatly appreciated.
I will have to admit here I am at a little bit of an advantage. I am a home owner but in years past as hobbies I did do a little bit of side work. I had a 24 X 24 garage. For a few years I did custom furniture. Mostly hutches, tables and entertainment centers. Though I did do a couple of grandfather clocks. Alcohol based dyes, stains with hand rubbed finishes were my normal. Though I did spray a few with Lacquer. Then came the big change. I started around the late 90's watching American Chopper. So I sold all my wood working equipment and set up a spray both. I got an old Honda gas tank painted it Black and took it to a local Custom bike shop. He looked at my work and gave me a fresh set of tins about a month later. Painted for him him for about a year until a promotion at work took all my time.
So HVLP wasn't new to me. I will say this. The water based Urethane I used was the hardest thing I have ever tried to spray. Getting the viscosity, pattern and flow wasn't easy.

You've got one up on me I haven't done any automotive spraying. I agree new waterborne products can be challenging to spray. However much easier on the body than solvent based products.

I rebuilt mine a couple years ago, had the kit sitting around for about a year prior but just never felt like messing with it. Then the heating element shit the bed so it was the perfect time to tear into it at that point, lol.

Pissed about the seam on the right side that wouldnt sand down and disappear. The stud was about 1" off from the other and was caked with previous tape/mud that i had to fill then there was a slight ridge to begin with. Gotta love 70s builds.

Why not add a new stud and remove the old?

would have required a lot more work and i have an outdoor overhand on the outside of that wall secured to said stud. I was only planning to replace the fireplace and already had to cut away to the left plug because the way the fireplace was put in. If you look can see the line above fireplace on before photo.

Also glad i never used the damn fireplace because there was no vent tube. So the back was FULL of creosote.

    What the actual?

That is easily in the top 5 construction idiot moves. WOW.

I like the look. Even if later you want a pellet stove in the corner or something.

I have an electric fireplace with a mantle that will be assembled this week. We never used the original and northern CA rarely need a full on fire so we opted for this and we have solar to balance out the electric cost.

Was that an existing masonry fireplace / chimney somebody added an insert into?

appears that way, they had to extend out the brick underneath to fit this monstrosity of an insert. Then they had the great idea to cover it in lava rock as that would look better.

Is the "lava" rock even real? Look faux in the pic.........but damn, maybe the occupants wouldn't die right away of CO or a bit later of CO2, the damned house would burn down...........for a quick wienie roast.

There was one originally, it was closed. But the photo with the insert is how it was when I opened it up. There was no attachment from the top of the insert to the chimney flue. It was open to vent behind the insert.

Is that really an insert? It looks like a free-standing stove shoved into a fireplace.
