Spare Tire in Bed Options?

while there aren’t the same issues about mounting your spare against the cab in the bed against the back wall...

I’ve had my spare mounted this way for about 50k miles including aggressive wheeling with no issues

 

No movement with the ratchet straps? Thought about strapping in a gas can that way but don't want it to bounce around.

Looked at my shortbed and now I'm thinking flat in the back.

Recently changed the setup because I needed more space to sleep so I took the mount off and turned the wheel and leaned it against the wheel well. Used a ratchet strap and chain/lock to secure it.

 

I imagine there’s a little movement if you just strap it to the bed rail, that’s why I also strapped mine down to the bed

No, no ones ever mounted their spare in the bed. Good idea though.

 

Unless you're off-roading, you can just lay the spare flat in the bed, and it won't move around, especially if you have a bed mat. This is what I've been doing, first in my old Ford Ranger, and now in my Tacoma. Actually, this kind of surprised me, because I had thought that surely heavy-duty tie-downs would be necessary. The weight anchors it. My spares haven't moved, even a fraction of an inch.

 

Hope your flame suit is on, that’s considered pretty careless in the event of an accident.

 

Flat and over the axle is best, especially if off roading. Otherwise passenger side upright.

 

I kept mine standing with anchors I made and a strap until it got too big to fit under my shell standing, then it was flat in the bed (with a bike cable lock to secure it from theft and ejection) after I removed the shell, until it grew again and was taking up too much bed space, was going to build a mount plate for the bed track but came across a swing out bumper. It's got it's plusses and minuses.

I would keep it standing against the front of the bed like @Tacomike18 if it wasn't for the truck box being inaccessible like that and the blind spot it creates.

Heck even mounted on the swing out created a big enough blind spot that high beams behind me no longer bother me, and so much so that I ended up putting in a rear all the time camera with decent sized screen as an additional rear view.

 

Got my 35" mounted vertical on the bedrail with ratchet strap and d-rings. Doesn't move at all.

 

The question of the rigidity of the bed rail came up. The Wilco mount is bolted to the bed rail and to the Cali raised molle panel, which is bolted to the bed of the truck. The tire sits on the bed of the truck so it doesn’t hang and break the front bulkhead.

Does anyone have their spare mounted on a swing out from the rear bumper that DOES NOT have a topper on of any kind? Any pics?

 

Yeah see thats why I’d do it in the first place. I like the flat mounted option best, I don’t trust the bed rail for 70-80lb tire and wheel.

 

obviously this isnt a 3rd gen but what are you looking for exactly?
why does it matter if there is a topper on it or not?

 

I have this weird idea that having a spare tire on the back will not look "right" if there isnt a topper of some sort. I don't know why I think that.

 

I like the spare tire on the tailgate but I would have to perform surgery or use one of those erector set contraptions that hook into the trailer hitch.

Of course if it was my 1980s mazda pickup I would drill a hole through the tailgate and bolt it on lol.
