When I bought mine the salesman called me because he new what I was looking for. I got to the dealer and it was around back because they had just gotten it off the truck. It had 5 miles on the odometer. I test drove it and came back that evening with my wife and we purchased it. It was so late when we got done the detail people had gone so I had to bring it back the next day to get it cleaned up but to be honest it wasn't really dirty. I snapped these photos while the salesman went to get the keys

Bought mine off the lot with 4 miles on it. According to the sales guy he didn’t even know it was out yet. Happened to be the color and package I was looking for.

I've looked at dealership cars & trucks that were fresh arrivals from the factory and they typically had 1-3 miles on their odometers.

It was on the truck in front of me turning left on to the dealer lot. Pulled in behind it and bought it right then and there. Wife in the passenger seat swore I set the whole thing up! 4 miles on the ODO if I remember right.

I bought from dealer stock. You don't have a lot of leverage buying a Tacoma these days, and you have even less if you order one. Buying dealer stock gives you the opportunity to put several dealerships against each other for the best price. My truck stickered at $39.5k and I paid $34.5k. I don't think that happens when you order.

When I had requested mine, I had a refundable deposit at 2 dealerships, and they both had deals around invoice and knew the first to get what I wanted from the factory got my sale.

I remember ordering a Chevy S10 Blazer (pre Tacoma days) and I showed up after the delivery truck dropped it off on a Saturday. Another salesman was going to let a customer test drive. My salesman was off that day. Obviously, no test drive was had!!! I wasn't very happy to say the least. I guess you never know.

Like others, I'm not worried about a previous test drive.
But, I wanted a 4x4 V6 access cab and the only ones on dealer lots were 4-cylinder 2WD SR models.
So, I special ordered it and waited twenty two weeks for it to be built and delivered.

Just curious, how much off sticker were you able to get it for?

I absolutely agree. I intercepted an allocation of a TRD OR DCSB with 6MT and my salesman got the color changed and a tonneau added before it was built, with other options installed port side. I took possession with 8 miles, which is how it came in. The only way to go—but it took 13 weeks. Was out in quality hold while Toyota dealt with their latest fuel pump recall (it didn’t need it) and then I speculate that it waited for production to fill up the boat (built 10/26, shipped 12/4, arrived 12/11).

I have never ordered, I always buy from dealer stock, after looking for what I need to get the best price.

It takes less time to find one I like, than to order. And the probabilities of getting a lemon, or one with issues are the same.
The difference is that at least I can test drive from dealer stock before committing much of my time or money on a special order one.

It's your money, your time. Do what seems best for you and learn from the experience

He got that invoice price back in 2017-18 - totally different market then. He couldn't do that today.
