I recently had an odd experience with TPMS that seems to have shaken down such that my 2009 thinks it's a 2008. Does that make sense, or am I ignorant of some basic stuff here?

Is it conceivable that my 2009 was assembled with a "left over" 2008 ECU as part of the model year transition? Build date is 05/2008 - I have no idea what the build cycles are like for Tacos, is that "early" for 09s?

2008 and 2009 trucks use entirely different ECU’s. The connectors are not compatible, different casing, the actual processor is different, among others.

Looks to me like you have a 2008 that for some reason is titled as a 2009 .

It might happen in a few ways.

Your truck year should go by production date .

Most times September is the new model year start. Then stuff changes all the time.

The VIN comes back from Toyota as a 2009 - odd. @JustDSM above says the ECUs are physically different, that's something I can check - what other physical differences could I easily identify from 08-09 model year?

For what it's worth, it's a TRD OR package. Weren't there changes in the 2009 models for traction modes with that package? I do appear to have the 2009+ features.

Everyone makes Typos for the last 50 years I have seen some strange things when it comes to paper work.

If an error was made on your production and it should be 05/2009 .

You bought this new from the Toyota Dealer ??

By Chance was this a non USA Market Truck imported to the USA via Uncle Sam`s Dime maybe?

Didn't buy it new, but I do have a full title history. First owner was in PA, I got it from the lot they traded it in at elsewhere. USA market truck.

Other than getting into the dash to look at the ECU (which I'll be doing EVENTUALLY), are there any other physical tell-tales of the 08/09 model year difference? It does have the airbags, ATRACS, and backup camera options that I think I remember being '09 changes.

Good luck figuring that out .

    Really strange

It reminds me of one that fell off the ramps being unloaded off the trailer took the better part of a year to get the insurance mess straightened out.

How a Truck with a Production Date of 05/2008 I could see if it was a Service Truck being built by an upfitter and took 6months till it was titled.Might be titled a 2009

    Weird things happen
