Happy meal rig with a size 20 zebra midge under a white wooly bugger - took the midge. I was sweating bullets on 6x with no net and so many logs around lol.

Big fan of the happy meal though, it’s been treating me well lately!

Can’t go wrong with any of those flies. If I only had 4 flies to fish every western river it would be zebra midge, pheasant tail, Adams & the bugger. If you fish those flies in varying colors I feel like you can get almost any trout (or whitefish for that matter) to eat.

Agreed, those are my 4 universal flies for any river. I’ve lost count the number of times I’ve bought the fly shop recs for “spooky” fish on “technical” rivers with no luck and ended up just throwing one of those 4 and getting hits.

The Possie Bugger is an easy candidate for the fly Hall of Fame. Anyone near the Mckenzie River will tell you it’s “the” fly that we won’t go anywhere without. It has caught fish for me on a few different continents. Give it a try.

Call the Caddis Fly (in Eugene). They can send you some. I tie mine jig style with legs and a rainbow bead, but the classic is on a standard nymph hook, no legs, gold bead.

Possibly the best, if not one of the best fly shops in the Northwest.

Starting to get a little worried about this spring run of steelhead. It's been over a week since I last hooked up. Finally found one this morning and it ended up being a old nasty hatchery fish.

Went down to Cedar creek hatchery on the Sandy river. Just over 500 steelhead have made it up to the hatchery. That’s crazy pathetic at this time. Not looking good.

It’s been a mix of old and new in the lower sections. The run is about over when that happens.

This season so far has been a bust BUT there is light at the end of the tunnel I hope...

    So far...
No steelhead (about 10 trips to the Sandy)
No trout (honestly have really targeted them though)
2 bass caught in the Columbia near cascade locks (really the only thing I have targeted so far)

With that said I have spent some money on rods and reels and a trolling motor set up for my inflatable pontoon boat.

things I’m looking for is a fish finder for my pontoon

here’s to a better year coming :cheers:and if anyone wants to hook up and toss a line in the water let me know. :hattip:

I have a little Minn Kota on my 10ft toon. We’ll definitely have to hook up some time. I plan on going to Timothy and Clear lakes to do some crawdading and fishing. Picked up about 10 traps over last couple years at garage sales.

Yea let’s hook up... Timothy is kinda of my go to spot once the snow melts but I wouldn’t mind going to clear or even trillium. I head to pine hollow also but the warmer it gets there the less desirable the fishing gets there

Ultra-lite surf fishing for red tails has ruined me for trout fishing, wish the coast was 100 miles closer to Bend! ....it's easy and stupid fun while standing out in the surf like an idiot. And they taste great which does not help. They hit hard on the Pistol Petes.

My expensive addiction to dory boat fishing out of Pacific City is also verging on unhealthy

I saw lots of people surf fishing when I drove the beach from gearhart to Astoria the other weekend.
