Bought it off the lot sight unseen. Technically, but they did send me a YouTube video. It was a manual with all the options I wanted and I put a downpayment on it the day it hit their lot since two other people were already interested in it. And had it delivered from 900 miles away.

2020 TRD OR in voodoo blue with LED upgrade, TRD exhaust, tinted windows, and paint protection film. Knew I wouldn't find one like that again being sold at sticker with $1500 off in Toyota cash. Had been patiently searching for months. Had less than 20 miles on it when it was delivered to the house.

It was actually fall 2016, but I was in a position to be able to wait, and if I was buying today, I would get pretty dam close to invoice. It’s all about doing the work. I am also not in Cali or other hotbed

I told my dealer (2 previous Tacomas from him), at Toyota Carlsbad, what I wanted and what color... He called me when one came in, and that evening, it was mine! They even removed my light bar and Ride Rite air bags from the old '05 for me to use on my new '10.

Mine the dealership was looking for one that fit what I wanted at dealership's around the area. I had a $500 deposit down and the first truck they went for they could not get. So they kept my deposit and kept looking. In a few weeks they got an inventory swap offer from another dealer that wanted a vehicle off their lot. The vehicle offered in trade was my cement sr5 4x4. A better match than the first truck. It was still inbound from the factory so I went with it. Agreed to buy it sight unseen until the day it came in and I went to pick it up.

I ordered mine last May, got in Aug. Not because of your concerns, but because (What little there was) the dealers only had the upper-end trucks on the lot. I didn't wanna spend an extra $15K-something for stuff I didn't want and would never use.

Mine had 19 miles on it when I got it, probably 2-3 test drives but I haven't had any problems yet lol, if they got it up over 90 that would be impressive.

I was doing that with my 4 cylinder, and I know it’s very possible with the v6

Here's the link to my info. My memory was a bit off on the exact numbers, but I was close. I think you can still get deals today, you just have to be smart and willing to compromise. It's funny to watch a lot of guys on here INSIST on a color or some other minute detail, only to trade it in a year later for the next color or minute detail. It's a tough lesson to learn, but there's always going to be a new something that makes your "special baby" feel old. You've got to move past that feeling...car manufacturers prey on people like that. Live and learn.

That is the truth right there.

The 3rd Gens are all mostly the same. Very little hardware change where it matters most.

Actually, I insist on exactly what I want precisely because I intend to keep the vehicle for many, many years and I do not want to be wishing that I had bought what I really wanted, rather than what the dealer had on hand. Case in point: I kept my 1991 4Runner for 15 years and 272,000 miles and my 2006 Nissan XTerra for 15 years and 305,000 miles. Both were special ordered and both were exactly what I wanted.

I’m with you, my first car was a ‘93 T100 which I still own and drive a couple of times a week.

A year ago when I started shopping for my Taco I knew what I wanted and fully-expected that I’d be needing to road trip to get it. I got really good at shopping for trucks on dealers websites. In the end I found the exact truck I wanted at a Toyota dealer 5 mins from my house. I got a fair price so no road trip was necessary, unlike the vehicle which my Taco replaced which required I take a one-way train ride to buy and drive home.

I drove by this 2019 AC at nearby dealership for a three weeks, thinking I should go test drive it. Went in and it had just 4 miles on it. Took it for a drive, made an offer and bought it.

I used autotrader and increased search radius until I found what I was looking for.
