I once had a rental Chrysler 300 with an 8-speed automatic transmission you put into gear with a dial. It would get into 3rd gear at parking lot speeds. I knew automatics were dumb before that, and I mean literally dumb, but wow that thing put a bad taste in my mouth. I laugh every time I see manufacturers boasting their new 10-speed automatics or whatever.

I've driven a couple CVTs that were pretty good, but they're not really the same as an automatic.

Everyone else has already said why manuals are an attractive choice. If it's been left unsaid maybe we can tack on better engine braking in snow, especially with 4WD.

    I’m snobby like that.
Don’t care about color, interior options; but I always and only want a stick.
I’ve never owned an auto daily driver and will probably drive older vehicles to avoid doing so.

    I like the control!

Funny thing there on the ATs. Folks who monitor the torque converter state say that the TC is always is flex lock (partial lock) when coasting.

There's nothing inherently wrong with an automatic, I was happy with the way my 2nd gen performed with the 4.0 and 5 speed auto, it was a package that worked well together.

I have no interest in a 3rd gen 3.5 6 speed auto, to me it is not a package that works well. Sorry, that's just my opinion from the several I have driven. They were 2017 and 2018 models, newer models may work better, but I have not driven one. If you're happy with your automatic I'm happy for you.

But if I have to shift the auto manually to make it work to my satisfaction, I would just as soon have the involvement of a clutch pedal as well. If the truck is in the wrong gear it's MY fault. And I discovered that I missed driving a manual. It makes the truck fun to drive. And nobody asks to borrow it.

Nothing funnier than seeing someone accelerating up a hill with the brake lights on.

    Two questions!

    How do they monitor it?

Flex lock means less engine braking while coasting, correct or no? If I'm thinking clearly that would be analogous to a slipping clutch, therefore less engine braking. This leads me to my third question, are you trying to provide one more reason to prefer the MT? :D

Glad my truck doesn't have it, if it did l would want the ability to turn it off/on.

Is hill start assist an option on MT? If it is I don’t have it.

It's a good theft deterrent, and its much more fun to drive. I also like that answer of "No one asks to borrow it". When I feel like I wanna drive an auto, I take the accord

Wired data logging in TechStream or vF or wireless monitoring in a phone app, like OBD Fusion.

Yes. Less braking effect with slip lock.

Sports and SRs have it. No known way to turn it off. Most times, it is okay-ish. Other times, it is annoying.
