Recently bought a 2020 Tacoma and now have a cracked front windshield. I was surprised at how easily the glass was damaged. Asked an expert that replaces windshields professionally on a daily basis. I was told that the front cameras that are mounted as part of the collision detection system use a thinner glass. Does anyone know about this problem?

yep. my 2020 got cracked by a rock on the interstate 2 months after purchase. My 06 2nd gen got a crack from rock twice. Most of my friends with Taco's have cracked windshields, so I just live with it.

I’m trying to find the thickness of the glass from 2020 back to a 2015. I understand it’s a fact of life, glass cracks I get that.

As a former owner of two FJ cruisers I can tell you that FJ windshields get cracked more than asses. It’s thin and so straight up and down that nothing glances off.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Don't have experience with this but word from others is that you shouldn't disconnect the battery or camera up top and you shouldn't need to recalibrate.

Stock glass is well know to be thin. You got insurance, turn it in.

Never had an issue with my 02, 05 or my 17. Bounced plenty of rocks off them.

My 2nd windshield was cracked at only 10k miles. Never had this issue on any of my vehicles. I dont tailgate anyone and avoid big trucks. No way im replacing my windshield again, ill wait till it gets super fucked. Both times the cracks went in a circle pattern, which is not common from what ive seen. I bet its something to do with the new "acoustic" windshields.

I would say these windshields are very thin/fragile.

My 2019 windshield cracked around 15k miles. My "theory" is that they make glass thinner because glass is heavy and they make everything as light as possible to improve gas mileage.

My 18 taco had a cracked windshield from a bolt on the freeway. Replaced for $275 with pilkington glass and the glass guy didn’t unplug the radar camera so I didn’t need to reprogram.

Cracked windows and the mountain west go hand in hand. Its not if, but when. My last 2 gen had 3 replacments on 200k. My new one, it's cracked now and I'm going to ride it without a windshield before I put a new one in it......... Call me the Flintstones, I don't care.

PS........ stay away from low profile cars, they kick the rocks up.

Bringing up an old thread. Have a solid 10" crack at under 2k miles on the truck. Anyone know if that's soon enough to be called defective?

Sorry these windshields are super fragile, that goes for most new vehicles now days though.

My first one cracked at about the same time and second one cracked at about 10k miles. I’m not replacing my second one anytime soon.

I don’t tailgate and stay away from large trucks.

Counterpoint: My 08 FJ ate windshields like a fat guy at a buffet. My '17 Taco is on it's original, crack free glass still. I think a lot of it comes down to luck and driving environment.

For warranty? No one can or will warranty a cracked windshield. It doesn't crack because of a defect, it cracks from stones

If there's a chip anywhere along the crack there's no way it'll get replaced by Toyota.

FWIW, I never had to replace a windshield in 16 years I’ve been driving. As soon as I got the taco, boom, 2 cracked windshields. I live in the same city and don’t drive like an angry teenager anymore. I see a lot of tacos and Jeep’s with cracked windshields around here.

My windshield is all pitted on the outside, never had this issue on any of my vehicles. I guess you are just lucky.

Your just lucky I guess lol.

On my FJ it just got so bad you literally quit caring by about the 3rd time in a year. I traded it in smashed all to hell.

May your next glass be thicker and bouncier.

Modern vehicles seem to have windshields that crack easily. I'm not sure what it is, but it isn't just a Toyota thing. I've also seen it with Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge. My dad's 2015 Colorado developed a crack about a year after he purchased it brand new.
