I actually like it, but that's most likely because I don't take the 19 off road that much, compared to the '16 OR I had..

Hmm interesting. I have an OR and I thought maybe it’s turned off somewhere. Could have been useful to save my clutch while teaching the teenagers to drive a MT but I guess it’s best to let them learn the way I did. Thanks for the info.

Oh yes, make them learn the right way.
They can enjoy the gadgets after they earn the right ( and possibly burn up your clutch lol!)

I asked them what hand I used for my cell phone the other day and the brighter one said you can’t dad. I said yup that’s right. All car should be manuals.

    Right on lol!

When my oldest son was thinking of buying a new car, he wanted a manual. He asked if I could teach him, to which I said sure.. right after I drive it home from the dealer for ya!
    No riding MY clutch

I’ve been driving with a stick for over 40 years.
I live in Pittsburgh and drive for UBER. I use a Kia Soul with a stick. It’s alittle hard to use a
manual driving for UBER but you’ll tear an automatic transmission up in no time doing all the starts and stops on these steep billy goat trail roads we have while driving for UBER.
I’ve already picked up 2 UBER drivers who needed to pick up their cars from having the transmissions replaced after about a year of hard UBER driving. One car was a BMW and the other was a Subaru. Yes I know who would use a BMW for UBER.
The roads here are worse then some off road
    riding.

I was planning to get a manual, but the dealer only had automatic to test drive. Man, that automatic really is as bad as everyone complains. I don’t even understand how people tolerate that kind of experience/performance. I actually almost didn’t buy the truck because of how bad it was to me, but I took the gamble and went ahead to order the manual. Waited 5 months but it showed up eventually, inferno with no tech package, v6, off road and a proper third pedal. Holy crap it drove so much better than the automatic. Way more responsiveness feels more connected.

Other pros, it drives off-road so well. Whatever they did for programming, the 1st gear 4lo engine braking is amazing. No descent control needed, just let off gas and creep down even crazy steep inclines.

negatives, I think it may be more clunky. There is noticeable clunk since new when disengaging the clutch at low speed, especially on incline. The dealer says this is the clutch and it should be replaced, but since it’s considered a consumable they wouldn’t cover it under warranty. There’s some clunks/vibration from the drivetrain in general, and most people write it off as “that’s body on frame truck behavior,” and I mean sure, but I’ve had other body on frame manuals that didn’t do this. The Tacoma has always been clunky though, so that’s nothing new about a 3rd gen manual, and guess what? They still go 300k miles clunking along the entire way, so who cares? It is what it is, as the dealership wrote in the service log, “characteristic of the vehicle.”

I live in Los Angeles county, drive all around the city and the manual has never been a problem to me in traffic. No plans to get rid of it anytime soon, and no regrets going with the make/model/trim/drivetrain. Still don’t understand how people drive the shit automatic Tacoma’s.

Yeah clunky is a good description. At first I was kinda embarrassed when easing around in a parking lot at Lowe’s or church but I thought it’s a truck. It makes it seem like you really don’t know how to drive a manual. Definitely not a refined machine.

For anyone that cares Center Street runs from around the 3:13 mark thru around 3:40, those old cobblestones beat the crap out of your vehicles.

I don’t believe so, I don’t have it either. Is it a rear wheel drive vs front wheel thing?

Lol nope. Auto. I was meaning both vehicles were rear wheel drive examples with hill start. I wish it was a manual. He would have something else and I would have kept it myself. It was my dads truck and he passed away a couple of years ago. It had 15k miles when I got it. Dad loved it but didn’t get to use it much. It is a 2015.

That was a Bruce Willis Movie called Striking Distance, I actually drove along the bottom of Center Street on a day they were filming and the had had a massive ladder on top of a giant truck to zoom in towards the top of the hill.

Low speed driveability, particularly 1st gear partial throttle, was vastly improved with the ECU flash update they released the other year. That was a game changer for driving around parking garages.
