So as the title says what are some main reasons why I should buy 2nd gen over a 1st gen? curious as to what 2nd gen owners would say...

It's gonna need a lot of love. People aren't necessarily wrong when they say an old Tacoma and will last you 900 billion miles, but that requires a lot more than basic maintenance.

That’s pretty subjective. I went from a 1st gen extended cab to a 2nd gen double cab not long ago.

I miss the overall size of the 1st gen. Those 3.4s will run forever, but feel under powered compared to the 4.0.

2nd gen definitely feels more up to date with the interior.

1st gen is gonna be tough to find with low mileage. So you’ll deal with everything that comes with that. Plus there were a lot of 1st gen frame recalls. Which means some were missed and are a rust time bomb.

could go back and forth on this for a while.

If you can find the right deal and I don’t mean cheap, but one that has all of the specs you want and well maintained w no rust then go for it. There is something nice about the simplicity of an older truck no TMPS or drive-by wire throttle. But if you can’t find that gem the 2nd Gen is a winner. I miss my 1st Gen and wished I never sold it but with a growing family the 2nd Gen fits me better now.

I went from a 92 xcab Toy 4wd to 2004 DC Tacoma 4wd to current DCLB 4WD. Love them all but the 2nd gen has that extra 5" of width that makes the interior more roomy. Wouldn't mind a 1st gen as a 2nd vehicle but good luck finding them cheap.

I'd say the retro premium you're going to have to pay isn't worth it. Buy a 2006 for cheapish and make sure it got a new frame. Or buy whichever makes you smile. :D

I wanted a 1st gen, couldnt find one for sale that wasnt crazy high mileage and it was still pricey

2nd gens are almost as expensive as 3rd gens so i bought a 3rd gen

i kind of regret it, these trucks have too much computer shit and it always beeping at you. So all i gotta say is dont buy a turd gen theyre kinda lame, and too big!

2015 is what I’d get if I could

I like both my 1st gens but they’re getting old.

1st gen is easy to work on. Even the timing belt isn't bad can do it in a day. Timmy the tool man has a good youtube video that I followed when my old lady had a first gen.
