My marine buddy told me when in "Helicopter" mode. If there were to be an engine failure. There is no disconnect drive/clutch to free spin the rotors for auto rotation since the whole drive terrain is hard linked. That worries me... Glad I prefer H60's.

I was about to ask was it not capable of spinning both rotors with a single engine failure but then reread your statement. I don't know how helos work except that, as my dad said, they "beat the air into submission" but gonna go with a solid "yikes" for every landing being that potentially disastrous.

My dad hates Ospreys. Almost ended up flying them. Cool as shit but the testing was...not so great.

I thought autorotate sucked at low alt anyway ... and at a higher alt you can get lift off the wings?

There's a bit going on with the folding. My internet is limited at sea, but if you do a search for "V22 Osprey Wing Fold" you'll see what I mean. The wings rotate, the blades fold.

We've been carrying quite a few Ospreys since they lost the Bonhomme Richard last year. It was our first time taking the ship to 10th street. Usually we only go to to National City. We offloaded a bunch onto North Island but it was very difficult to get the ramp to work with the dock they wanted us to use. The dock was set up for ships that don't use ramps for cargo. Army helos get dropped off onto the car dock in National City, they put them back together and then fly them off about a week later. USMC stuff is usually ready to fly before the ship leaves. They were in the process of flying them away today as we left the dock.

Your dad's schedule is similar to mine, but I usually do 10 weeks on board then 10 weeks vacation. With 52 weeks a year I usually wind up with one long year (30 weeks of work) followed by a short year (20 weeks of work).

I am struggling to recall. I want to say John but that seems so generic and probably not correct. He was on the heavily modified Citation V that you have as well as the G450 at the time. It was funny because we were both dual qualified on the same two types at completely different jobs.

I would imagine auto rotation is highly desired whether it's low or high altitude. Don't want to drop like a brick.

Lift is provide by those whirly blades, but that's in helicopter mode, but in forward flight mode. I think enough momentum is established to provide lift.

Disclaimer - Not an expert on V22. Just a dude that likes flying machines.

Autos suck at any altitude but with two engines it is very uncommon. The Osprey blades are low inertia and not big enough to do an auto, at altitude it can glide like a plane and at low altitude it suffers from the same problem every helicopter has when the engines get quiet.

Awww. Craig is such a good dude. He unfortunately went back to work in the engines test cell.

Are you saying the training went 'downhill quickly'? Doesn't sound like the problem is resolved then.

It’s been years since I’ve been down near the national city docks, that’s super cool that they get to fly off of the docks when they get delivered.
That schedule sounds rough, I just left a traveling job where I was on a site for 2 months when they said in the interview they worked 3 weeks on 1 week off, I didn’t like being away from my family or my dog for that long. Dad gets to essentially set his own schedule thanks to the union, as long as he works 1,400 hours per year, his last 3 week trip he put in 332 hours, he has one more 3 week trip planned and then if the summer is fairly dry he’ll be working at home to build his hangar.
