I GOT THE SEMA RIMS WITH THE FATTY TIRES! DO I NEED WHEEL LOCKS?

Just wondering if other Tacoma owners get wheel locks. Or do thieves only go after sport-type wheels? It would take a lot more blocks to make off with my rims!

 

I think it would depend more on where you live than anything else.

And the don't need blocks, they'll just leave it on the ground.

 

I don't have wheel locks installed on my wheels. I don't think its super necessary since its probably easier to just steal the entire truck

 

Locks just slow down the want to be THIEVES! The professionals have the necessary tools and equipment to get what they want.

 

Around here they don’t steal your wheels they just take the whole car/truck and it ends up being dumped on the side of the road somewhere.

 

Thanks! I think I’ll risk it. I think the only time I’ve had wheel locks was my car before this, a snazzy Audi S5 with a V8. Two door coupe with a stick shift. Super fun car. I could see thieves putting that on blocks and making off with the rims. But probably not. I dinged those rims quite a few times hitting curbs and such, which would always pop those skinny tires. 5 flats in two years! I once got two flats at the same time hitting a curb and had to abandon the vehicle! Glad to have the Tacoma, where I can go over anything...

 

Just always park next to someone with nicer wheels. In all seriousness I have wheel locks on my oem pro wheels but i know if they want them they'll get them, i just want to make it harder on them.

 

Speaking of wheel locks, is there any brand that is the "best", or reputable? Or are they all the same practically.

 

Gorilla wheel locks seem to be popular.

 

Locks can be a pita anyways because the keys are usually made of cheap metal.

 

Gorilla spline lugs. Or similar brand. Unless they have the key a regular wrench won’t work.

 

When you lose the key you'll see how easily they're defeated, unfortunately it'll cost you even more time and money.

 

Wheel locks are nothing more than a headache. Pass.

 

I have OEM locks on my truck. It's mostly to deter the opportunists, but I have 0 faith they would stop anyone who is prepared to steal wheels for a living.

My wheels are beat up from wheeling over the years even the full spare on the swingout is pretty beat up and can easily be un-mounted with three lug nuts. I highly doubt anyone will want beat up rims. If you have pristine wheels, then honestly make a judgement call based on where you live and commute. I think it's an annoyance having a wheel lock when it comes to rotating my tire and replacing a spare on the trail. I personally would recommend not using them.

 

If you gotta get them, get the best quality, and check them periodically.

Nothing like being stuck on the side of the road because the face of the locking lug nut just crumbles right off when you try to loosen it. Happened to me on a buddies 1st gen when I was delivering a motorcycle engine to a guy in Delaware for him. Luckily I was not far from the guys shop at that point, and he had a torch setup on his truck, he drove out to where I was and burned the nut off on the side of the road. Truck had 5 lugs on the right front until he sold it, and I bet it still does. Thing probably has 300,000 miles on it by now.

No more locking lug nuts for me, thanks. I'm not too worried about my stock sport wheels being stolen anyway.

 

After having worked in a shop and discovering multiple vehicles where the key for the wheel locks was MIA, I can assure you it isn't that hard to get most of them off with a socket anyway.

 

Oem wheel locks = junk
Gorilla wheel locks = junk
Almost every wheel lock on the market can be easily taken off without the key.
I've found 2 wheel locks that seems to have a good shot at being unbeatable. The first, which is ridiculously expensive and super complicated system that honestly makes no sense to me, but seems very hard to beat, is Rimlox. Again, way too expensive and complicated for my taste.
I did find a small company called Advanced Wheel Locks. Seems to be a high quality and I don't see how they could be taken off without the key. Cone shaped, stepped varying teeth. A socket can't be crushed onto it, as you'll never be able to grab the bottom lip of the cone and the socket would just fall off once torque is applied.
I sprung for a set of black locks for my sema wheels. As well as an extra key. Hoping they are shipped any day now.
