So before I did my 04B33 update and ordered the VF tune with the Tacoma tune pack I tried a few things to get a little more low end of shall I say boost performance. I installed an MBRP 3” catback and an Airaid CAI. I know we already have true cold air intakes and this was an enclosed intake that used the same fender well port for air. Anyway to make a long story short the truck was worse on the low side due to making the mistake of going to 3 inch cat which killed the scavenging and I really didn’t notice much with the airaid except sound and a little more on the high side. The sound of the exhaust was great but honestly the truck runs better stock. At least I feel it does. Is anyone else running cats or a different CAI and if so have you seen improvements.

Bilsteins 5100s on the top setting, 4runner Gray TRD Pro Sema wheels, 285/70/17 Toyo AT3s, Sumo Bump stops, TRD exhaust, ECGS Clamshell bushing, 1/4 shim for the lean and one inch rear block, OEM Pro grill and garnish OEM TRD Skid plate, TRD CAI, Demon Brackets, Rigid Industries Pro fog lights, OEM Trail Rails sidebars, Diode Dynamics LED SL1 high and low beam lights, OEM Roof racks, Clazzio leather heated seats, Remote Start, TRD Pro shift knob, tinted windows, Rockford Fosgate 4 channel amp for the headunit and sub and amp combo, OEM Puddle lights, OEM tailgate lock, OEM bed mat, LED interior lights, OEM blackout kit for letters, JLT catch can, upgraded 27F toyota True Start battery, Vleds led tail light kit with Pro tail lights, OEM Rave4 side mirrors with convex spotters, just to name a few mods.
I think your larger exhaust hurt your performance, I think the CAI is ok. Sell it, try the Pro exhaust. I run the TRD CAI, Pro exhaust and the OV tune. Prior to the tune it felt smoother and a little more responsive. After the tune was the ticket. Runs stronger in the lower rpm, shifts have firmed up and are more crisp and it holds in gear longer to fix the gear hunting. Some adjustment were made to my rune and the shifting is much faster, more crisp.

You are not going to get some magical Low end power by just installing a exhaust and intake . You need a tune to compensate for the extra air flow . You actually lose low end power without a tune since your air to fuel ratio is off . If you truly want power go supercharger with a tune .

The ECU should adjust for any changes in air load. Increasing the mass flow thought the intake is not going to cause AFR changes until the injector duty cycle is maxed out, which is def not going to happen in the low end. All that said, CAI will not do anything helpful. The stock intake is not a restriction and already sources a "cold" air source. It's just a gimmick. Also, a catback shouldn't make much difference in scavenging if the exhaust manifold/headers and cats are still stock. The manifold/headers are what really dictate cylinder scavenging and exhaust velocity where is makes the difference (at the exhaust ports).

So going 3” after the flange should really hurt the low end. I’ve had it on and off 3 times. I really love the sound. I know that’s all it really does is change the sound right

I have the OV tune pack ready to go. Just did my TSB update yesterday so giving it a bit before I throw a tune on it. Does it really matter though? Waiting I mean

I would go ahead and flash your tune, no reason to wait in my opinion. You'll reset the learned values anyways after you do the tune.

Do I have to go back in to techstream for the resets or does the VF TUNER slow that? I’m asumng techstream. I do mostly city driving. Stop and go so I’m telling looking for more low end. It there a tune in the pack that would benefit me more for that! I’m not ready o start editing yet.

I don't think flashing a tune will reset any learned values unless you specifically reset them otherwise.

And I don’t need an internet connection to flash my tune right?

Right, the tune itself won't reset anything but its recommended to reset the LV and AT per the installation guide thread.

Thanks for all the input. It there a particular tune in the pack that would be geared more for city driving

I don't think one is necessarily geared more for city driving. If your truck is stock wheel size and gearing you can basically choose between regular or premium fuel and if you want the enhanced throttle response (labeled Thx).

I'm running the Regular-Stock-Thx on mine and am happy with it. I plan on trying the Premium fuel version at some point down the road.

I think my shifting feels more normal and predictable than the stock was. The throttle is a little more responsive.

You should go ahead and give it a shot! The flash process is very easy and you can do the LV and AT resets right in the flash tool.

I flashed the stock regular thx yesterday and I like it. Not a drastic change but definitely smoother
