Understood on those points. My concern is the harness itself (specifically the switching unit) going bad after a short period of time. Not so easily fixed, unlike a cheap and easy camera replacement.

The harness is plug and play, very easy to replace, same with the switching unit. Nothing complicated or expensive at all. I have used numerous aftermarket wiring harnesses and relays for amps, lights, etc. and I can't think of any that have failed. I am however, very meticulous with any installs I have done.

Most of the issues you see on this thread is people within the 2020 transition, the 2020's needed a different unit and there was a lot of unnecessary confusion.

The cameras themselves are cheap, mine has a rubber protection sleeve where the wire enters the back of the camera, I siliconed it all to prevent any water entering, that is definitely a weak spot and probably the main problem that most people are encountering with failing cameras. If you prefer, spend good money on a good camera.

Mine crapped out too, went to static. Pulled the head, checked the connections all the way to the camera but nothing but static. Tried to contact the guys at TacoGarage, but no response. Finally bought an identical replacement camera off of eBay (only place I could find it), a Pormido PR-550 for $55 (including shipping) and started figuring out what part of the system was bad. It wasn't the camera, it was the switch cable the camera plugs into. Hopefully, this helps.

What’s the best camera out there nowadays? Is there an OEM Toyota/Lexus option that will work?

You can buy oem front camera for the Tacoma for about $420.

Best is relative, my cheap camera has better image quality than oem. Bought from op.

The camera is not hard to replace. It's a $25.00 part. Sometimes parts go bad. My camera is easy enough to replace (you can just splice wires). If the camera is bad, just order a new one, splice in the new one, done!

Agreed. I wonder if I can replace my rear camera with a nakita? Its far superior to the OEM. Only thing I wish our backup cams did was TURN THE LINES line my Wife's Rav4 does.

Seriously?! Toyota has the capability to make the lines turn and they don't on most? That's crap. That was my favorite feature on the Yukon Denali I rented on vacation.

I believe the camera lines can "turn" because the RAV4 has electronic steering, the Taco does not, so the signal is not there. Just my guess.

I meant it would be nice to have this feature but how anyone could deal with that horrible sound the tacoma radio puts out, and please dont say just change speakers. If you have a bad sounding source unit it doesnt matter what speakers you have. Still it would be cool to have that ability with the camera thou if the tacoma oem radio didnt beyond suck!

And you should be able to up/down all the windows from the remote.

    And have memory seat/mirror function.

My 20 year old Lexus had both of those features as standard...

Yeah I do miss that about my Lexus (I had a 2012 IS350AWD that I sold ((for a pretty price!)) to get this 2020 Tacoma). But then again, Trucks aren't meant to be Luxury vehicles. Even my Lexus' rear camera did not "turn" with the wheel either. That's a nice feature when trying to back out nicely.

Read through a great deal of content that you all have shared and want to say thanks.

I went ahead and made my own mount for the TRD OR Grill and bought the Natika WD-007 camera instead of the WD-011 camera so that it looks more like the OEM. Everything worked out really well. I used the Germes Lab: RFCC Car Camera Control System for Toyota Touch 2 CY17-19 / Entune 3.0 / Link for my 2020 OR Tacoma and everything was plug and play. Installed it through the driver side firewall like others which was the worst part like all have said.

At the end of the day absolutely worth it. For a little more than $200 total and maybe 1-2 hours of work plus some time getting the camera centered correctly I now can safely see over my hood. Thanks again everyone for being very helpful with your posts. Here are some photos to share.

In case it comes up for anybody else let me save you the headache. The 2020 version does not work with 2020 models that have the multi terrain monitor (360 cameras).

Always wanted to ask, was anyone able to program the number of seconds how long the front camera remains on after you shift away from Reverse Gear? I want to reduce it to 3 seconds.
Mine shows Front camera view for a solid 10 seconds.
I had PM'ed @FreshMexicanTaco about this before, and he didn't respond. Asking the community if anyone knows how to.

Initially I was thinking along these lines.

Now I know the signal is there, Toyota just doesn't give us the feature. I installed a Joying unit in my 2017, and the lines curved when turning the wheels.

No way to change the time value as far as I know. But if your forward speed reaches 12mph the front camera display will cease immediately.

where did you find that mount for the TRD OR grill? Did you fab it up or were you able to buy it somewhere?
