Front Driveale, CV boot leaks

Where did you get your from?

 

I got them thru my friends shop, I know they weren't from Toyota but I'll find out tomorrow for ya buddy..

It all depends on why there was a problem in the first place and whether you think its going to happen again.

Several of the auto parts houses are offering lifetime warranties on their rebuilt units, at pretty reasonable prices. Something you wont see with new OEM parts.

 

I cleaned all the greese and i tore the outer boot, I have a lift so my cv's are kinda angled, so it will happen more often then a stock truck.

 

So it wasn't leaking from the clamp like GOLFMAN845's axle was. His was the clamp on the inner boot. Where on the outer boot is it torn? Do you suppose the fins might have been touching there where the tear occurred?

How much lift do you have? Is it from 5100? Diff drop?

 

I'll have to see if the fins were touching, I have a 2.5"spacer and I do not have a diff drop and it is not a lose clamp there is a tear in between the fins

 

If the fins touch, even a little bit, a groove will form at the point of contact. The boot will eventually tear where there is contact. If this is the root cause, a diff drop kit may lower the axle angle enough to keep it from happening again.

 

I had the same issue with my 02, just took it to my local machanic and he snugged up the clamps and it never leaked again.

 

I have the kit I just never installed it because I heard that you can get vibs from moving your diff. Maybe its time to install it

 

I just had the same issue with my 02 nothing was torn but the claps were not tight. Went to a friends shop used some tool to tighen them but still leaked. I also have a lift with no diff drop but will be getting one vibs or not vibs its a truck not made to ride smooth. I got him to get new shafts from Napa so far so good and not bad on price with lifetime.

 

From what I've read on here, it is the 2nd gen front diffs that are having a lot of vibration issues after lifting and doing the diff drop doesn't seem to help.

The diff drop kit seems much better suited to 1st gens.

 

^^^Verry true! I just did my lift and have the damn vibe. It sucks! diff on or off doesnt seem to help. I may just deal with it, bc Im out of warrenty. Or get the RCD kit later on... I miss my 02!

 

Well I replaced my front axle's Sunday drove it back to St. Louis last night, then came out and found this morning.



I am going to take it back apart tomorrow and put in a new Output Shaft Seal in it. Will probably do both sides, just to be safe.

Well I noticed a few spots on the driveway and I'v been able to track it down to the drivers side inner CV boot. There doesnt seam to be a tear of any sort, but there is a considerable grease leak going on that appears to be coming from the inside (larger) boot seal..


I'v read that it is easier to replace the whole thing instead of just the boot but I kinda down have the time or $ to do that right now.. Are there any other options for a fix? refill grease? How long do I have til this creates a bit problem?

I'v had the truck less than a month and have no idea how long the problem has existed. Thanks!

 

Whats up all. I had a small tear, maybe 2mm, But grease was coming out. I cleaned it off and put some Gorilla Glue on it. It was on the outer fin of the boot where there would be no contact from the other fins. Any thoughts on this Ghetto / McGuyver-esqe fix. And how much does Toyota charge to change out the boot?

if it holds awesome! its a bit too late for me though, my drivers side boot is completely torn in 2. I need to get that replaced, just no time lately.

 

Might as well replace the whole axle. A lot simpler and less time consuming than trying to replace just the boot. Axles with lifetime warranties are cheap. My buddy paid $75 at Vatozone for his.
