What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Cried on behalf of my wallet after buying new OEM ball joints and tie rods, redline mt90, and a few other parts

 

money well spent!!

 

Back to stuff I don’t know about, is it normal for fuel trims to jump when you’re just coasting?

 

I guess it’s the same amount I’d spend on a monthly payment on a new taco

Some things I've done to the truck recently. Not all that exciting, but necessary maintenance nonetheless:

Replace the idler bearing,
Replace the taillight bulbs,
Replace the throttle body with the original I got back from Max Bore and swap in the known-good IAC from the TB I've been running,
Replace the power steering and air conditioning fan belts
Swap in the drivers side CV axle, torque & locktight driver side LBJ bolts, top off front diff

 

With mileage, the throttle plate wears a groove into the main bore of the TB. The throttle plate is supposed to close completely and not allow air to pass by it at idle. The Max Bore service machines the opening round again and replaces the plate.

When the throttle plate is functioning correctly (not allowing air to pass) the engine and its electronics manage the air and idle through the IAC. Intake Air Control.

Mine was pretty grungy too. My mistake was cleaning it because the grunge was helping it to seal the throttle plate. I compounded the problem by not removing the TB from the plenum.

When you clean yours, make sure the IAC is removed so the grunge cannot get into it and gum it up.

 

If you don't want to remove the IAC before cleaning, at least flip the TB upside down so there is no chance of anything dropping into the IAC. I ruined mine and it is an expensive piece to replace. Best price I can find on it is $225 for the OEM parts.

After the Max Bore work, no light shines through.

I suspect most of my idle issues were the IAC, but there is no way for me to be certain how things would have been after cleaning if I hadn't fucked up my IAC.

 

Here’s where I’m looking at

Right side, sits above frame

Left side, sits right in top of frame

 

Gap the left side up and do a few soft bounces on the right corner and see if you can get it to drop. Keep adding space on the left and bounce on the right till it levels out. Just be careful if you have rust issues. Don't want to make things worse. It's also possible some of the mounting bolts are missing or loose.

From what I read about the rules, you are correct.
