New Toyo Open Country A/T III tire

what made you pick the Toyo AT3s over the Wildpeaks? I'm making that choice tomorrow. I think the KO2s are too aggressive for me so those are an easy out. I'm a Toyo fanboy now since my M55s have really held their own after I put them through hell, but so many people say good things about the Falkens on here it's a tough decision.

 

I would say yes. For sidewall strength a C Ply rated BFG with a 3 ply sidewall would have more puncture resistance for the sidewall.

I have had a few people tell me they swear by them and the shop owner where I got them said he has seen nothing but good results on all the trucks he puts them on. Says most people get an extra 5-10k miles on them over Falken and BFG depending on road usage vs. off road. He’s been doing it for 30+ years but hey everyone has their own opinions. They are a little less aggressive than the KO2s which like you, is exactly why I wanted them. But damn they are sexy and I am super glad I got them over any other manufacturer.

 

Are they less aggressive than ko2? Yes the sidewall is more aggressive than the ko2. The tread does look meaty enough and maybe has the same spacing or more spacing between the tread. Tread depth is deeper on the toyo compared to KO2 but not by much. The sidewall strength is probably superior on the KO2.

i'm still trippin out on the 255/80/17 being only 50lbs on the load e. is that right??? might go this route for my next tire. i have a 3" lift, spc ucas, 0mm offset wheels. currently running 265/70/17 tires and they dont fill the wheel well enough. cooper at3 4s passenger rated and when around 41lbs. i dont think an extra 9lbs per tire will make a huge difference in driving. i ran load c ko2s before but they were TERRIBLE on wet roads.

Switched over to Toyo AT3s from stock TRD OR Goodyear Wrangler w/Kevlar. Chose Toyos because I run roughly 80/20 on/off road so they were a good compromise between on and off road performance.

Weight was an important factor - stock Goodyears weigh in at 35lb per wheel (the lightest tire in its class by far) so I didn't want to move up to a Light Truck or E load range tire at ~50lb per wheel adding 60lb overall with effects on rotational inertia and fuel economy. Toyos are 41lb each which is pretty standard for a SL index tire.

On Road
Drove local road and freeways. No noticeable difference at all between stock Goodyears and Toyos in acceleration, cornering, handling, braking, etc. If anything the Toyos feel better on aggressive corners (no screeching) but that's probably due to new tread vs 5/32" tread on the Goodyears. This shows dB noise level in the cab between Goodyears and Toyos at 70mph:
So no appreciable difference in noise between stock Goodyears and Toyos. Good traction and handling. Good as stock steering response. Noticed no major difference in MPG so far but would have to drive more to get more data on that.

Off Road
Took them out for a test in Anza Borrego which is a mix of soft sand, washboard, and rocks. No major rock crawling. The Toyos performed great. I drove the Goodyears all over the southwest through deserts and rocky passes and they performed great - I had no complaints. I did get 2 sidewall punctures over the course of 4 years, one from off road and one on but I'm not sure thicker ply sidewall would have prevented either puncture. The Toyos performed just the same as the Goodyears, doing well on rocks, dirt, and soft sand.

Haven't had a chance to test in snow, mud, or wet weather. Will update if I do.

Conclusion
Overall I'm really happy with the Toyos. They're well mannered on road and do what they need to do to get me where I need to be when off road. If aggressive looks are your thing I think you might be disappointed with the SL tires. They have a fairly decent tread depth (13.3 vs KO2 15, Falken 14, stock Goodyears 11) but the sidewall isn't particularly aggressive looking, especially compared to Falkens and KO2s. The Toyo AT3 LTs have a more aggressive sidewall but also weigh 15lb extra per tire as a trade off.

If you're looking for a good balance between daily driver and occasional off road for overlanding or light rock crawling these will fit your needs.

Bonus
I moved up from 70 to 75 aspect ratio which are the largest tires you can fit stock without lifts or chops. I also have extra weight on the front end in the form of steel winch bumper+winch, and steel skid plates. Didn't experience any rubbing at all either on road on full turns and aggressive brakes, or off road with flex. Obviously YMMV but this is another data point for anyone considering a slightly larger tire on stock TRD OR suspension.

I wanted to add that I'm still getting 22.2 MPG (uncorrected) HWY if I keep it under 65 MPH (2021 Pro - Auto). These are perfect for my 95% city driving needs and 5% dirt driving needs. I'm not an "off-roader" or "over-lander".

these came out to be $50 more than the Wildpeaks and $100 less than the KO2s. I was ultimately swayed by a great experience with my Toyo M55s which made me stay with Toyo.

 

Looks great! Are those 285/70/17? C or E? Would you mind measuring the actual mounted height when you get a chance?

 

yeah 285 70 r17. C. I would highly recommend avoiding E if possible, too stiff for our trucks in my opinion unless you have a full cab with armor and winch, RTT, and a loaded squat rack in the back, but again that’s just my opinion. I think they’re just shy of 33”

 

Did you have to do any chopping?

 

No. No rub here. 3” kings in the front and Wheeler progressive AAL in the rear. Was running 255 85 r16 before this and those are slightly taller but much skinnier without rub either.

 

Was going to give these a shot but may be going a different direction. Just mounted some 285/75r16 on my new TE37X in a 16x8 et 0 but they are calling for a ton of weight and road force numbers are higher than I would expect after being match mounted.

Tire 1 - 32lbs road force, 4.25 ounces inner and 9.0 ounces in the middle
Tire 2 - 10lbs of road force, 7.75 ounces in the inner and 10.25 in the middle
Tire 3 - 26lbs of road force, 7.50 ounces on the inner and 12.50 in the middle
Tire 4 - 33 lbs of road force, 4.75 ounces inner and 10.25 in the middle

 

With new tires and new rims? That's crazy. Are the rims out of round or something?
I swear some of these tire shops make shit up to stay in business.

I put 6 oz of balance beads in each tire, and mount them. A few years ago I had to search around for a shop that would mount my tires using the beads instead of weights. Now that shop sells the balance beads.

 

Brand new wheels and tires. Just opened the Volks and lubed the wheel and tire beads before mounting. I mounted them myself, I spent over 7 years doing tires in what feels like a previous life. I don't have any balance beads here otherwise I would give it a try. Going to air up the tires to max and let them sit over the weekend and try them again before I put them on the truck.

 

My set of five had two with zero weights. I have never seen this before and they came with little stickers that said perfect balance.
I bought wheels and tires from discount direct. They drive fine and feel good. The fastest I’ve gone so far is 65mph
