i used to get 19-21 during the summer in the 3.4 w/ deckplate mod. currently im getting 15 w/ cat back and deckplate mod. It's lifted but I don't have the funds for tires yet (yeah yeah... I know). It doesn't make sense to me that I've lost 4-6 mpg just from lifting, but then again maybe it does affect mileage that much with aerodynamics and what not plus winter gas. but 4-6 mpg? that's alotta gas

Back in 98 I had a brand new V6 extracab 5 speed with a 4" pro comp lift and 33x12.50's. I drove it pretty much daily and in 99 I took the job I have now with a 45 mile one way commute. I got 17.5 MPG with it driving 70 on the highway. However I did have a dynomax 2.5" in dual 2" out muffler with custom tailpipes on it for a while and I did lose 1-2 mpg with that setup. I had the same setup on my wife's nearly identical 98 with 32's and we noticed a mileage gain taking it off that truck too. I've had a lot of lifted Toyotas and the only ones that got the same mileage as stock were regeared and had headers on them. I had a 91 with a 4" lift, 33's, 4.88's and a downey (RIP) header that got 24 mpg on the highway. I miss that truck.

Being colder doesn't help, either. It takes me a few more miles to get up to operating temperature. With my Scangauge I can definitely tell the difference in MPG as soon as the temperature stays below freezing even for a few days.

    None - yet...
My last ride was an 05 Ram 1500 RC 4x4 SLT with HEMI 350 V8 and AT. Got 14 MPG average on 70% HWY 30% City consistently for the 5 years I had it. Didn't matter if it was hot or cold. My new Taco gets around 17 to 18 MPG. A little disappointed in the mileage, but I like the Taco better. Much smoother ride. A bit less power, but that will be resolved with a super charger in the near future.

Man, I think you shoulda worded this one a little better...

    :D

I "voted" and my Taco is stock other than an aftermarket alarm. I'm not too concerned about the MPG as I live 6 miles from work. I do a lot of road trips, but that is part of the reason I bought the Taco.

So.. well. Meh. I can't keep a full size. Won't fit.

If you want great gas milage buy a Yaris ( 38-40 mpg). Great transportation and my wife love it. If you want to haul stuff and maybe pull a trailer, I bought my Taco V-6, 4 wheel drive (18-21 mpg). Ask yourself, "Why did I buy this truck???? " Gas Mileage or all the other neat stuff I can do with my 4 wheel off road, trailer pulling truck !!! Happy with 18.5 mpg

A better question one might ask is. why can GM and arguably ford make a more powerful larger engine using older technology and getting better mileage.

I used to ask ford why they did that. selling a 4.6 litre that got the hp of a dodge 4 litre and mileage of the gm 8 litre. Seems toyota has done poorly at adapting to american horsepower lust. Satisfying neither the horsepower or the mpg. They get by on old loyalties and the destruction of the mini truck class all together. Even the ranger has seen its last model year. ANd that truck was only good for 2 people unfortunately. I feel like the frontier is a larger truck, but more-so it has a poor heritage. old z trucks were nothing to the real toyotas. tHINK the new nissans could give these fakey toyotas a run for their money once toyota loses what's left of its reputation.
Not that everything is better than toyota now a days. Just there's nothing left in the truck segment to bother arguing about. You have what you have because they don't make em worth it anymore' But the old stuff is beat to hell and old.

    OK,

I tried really hard to not post a reply here, but I couldn't avoid the temptation. This is just an absolute crock of shit. I don't care what you drive, whether it be super duty Ford with horrid gas mileage, or that 3-wheel auto-rigshaw from India that gets like 90 MPG. GAS MILEAGE DOES MATTER. If Gas mileage DIDN'T matter, then try explaining that to the millions of Americans (including you and me for that matter) and everybody else around the world when crude sky-rocketed to $148 and we paid $4+ per gallon.

Did you forget that crisis all too soon? How about Chrysler offering $3/gallon max if you bought their vehicles then?

If your Tacoma only got 1 mile to the gallon, would it matter to you then? Yes it would, just like it does matter when we get 14 or 15 or 21 mpg.

So, quit saying stuff like "if I cared about gas mileage, I would have bought a Honda Fit...." or something like that. I very much care about gas mileage and made a conscious decision to buy my taco based on the fact that I would get 20/21 MPG on the average which I do. If it was 15 or less I wouldn't have bought it.

Many of us are working people who drive 60+ miles a day. I drive about 65/70 miles a day between work and day care and school. So, ya, $3/gallon at 20mpg divided by 60 miles a day is about $9 a day in gasoline. So it does matter.

If you are a trust-fund college student who has their mommy paid for your gas in [her] taco and you only drive 10 miles a week, then I guess it doesn't matter.

That being said, in countless threads I have read and posted my own questions about gas mileage with larger tires (33", 34" and 35") because, I, like many others, am wanting to and going to be getting a lift and bigger tires because we like the looks, performance etc and we want to know just what we are getting into.

For instance, in my own case, if my larger tires bring me down to 17mpg I can live with that, but probably not much lower than that.

Companies buy vehicles everyday that aren't that great on gas mileage but a little change in numbers means a lot (UPS, Southwest, any flowershop etc).

My point, nothing wrong with having a nice truck, that has power, performance, and looks and STILL gets decent/good mileage which is also considered.

    OK, off my box now.

"I can live with that" equals gas mileage doesn't matter

Because if you were truely and extremely concerned with gas mileage, you wouldn't be here.

Running a stock '06 4 door TRD, 4L auto. Best mileage was 10.4l/100 with a tailwind last fall. Switched to 16" rims/tires and haven't checked the mileage since. I do know the Taco blows away the mileage from my GMC crew with the 6L. Fuel savings makes a good portion of the payment
    Very happy with the Tacoma.

I have an '09 Access Cab SR5 4 cyl, 5 speed. I get 24-25 mpg on average. I put a K&N Cold Air intake on it 4 days ago. That may help with the mileage a little... I'll let you know in a week or two.

I feel very much the same way about tacomas in general. I've had every body style compact pickup toyota has made. Many of them lifted on 33 or 35 inch tires. The older trucks were far more durable and overall better built machines. But they were small, underpowered, rode fairly rough, and there are very few good ones left because people actually used them. Now that i'm older and have a family one of the old trucks just doesn't work for me. I absolutely love the comfortable ride. power, and interior space of my double cab. The mileage isn't terrible but considering the amount of power it has compared to my old 22r and 22re trucks I really don't mind. And I drive about 90 miles a day. I've had commuter cars and I never kept them long. I just didn't feel comfortable driving them. In the summer I commute in an old 5.0 mustang that gets just slightly better mileage than my tacoma. 10 years ago I restored an FJ40, which is arguably the most bad ass 4x4 Toyota ever built. When I want the ultimate in ruggedness it's right in my shop ready to go. And it always will be. But I honestly only put about 1500 miles a year on it. I would love to have an 82 or 83 shortbed pickup sitting next to it and an 84-85 supra as well. Someday I will but I need a bigger garage first.
