So I bought a 2013 with only 49k miles, a little after I got it I noticed that sometimes when I shift from park or reverse to drive, like I have my foot on the break, shift into drive and it will lunge forward without me even moving my foot, my question is, is this normal or do I need to have my transmission looked at?

    Sounds pretty Normal to me.
These trucks have different reasons they “lunge” forward.

Most common complaint is when the AC compressor comes on.
The system is most often described as “someone tapped my rear bumper when stopped” feeling.

The other is drive line slack and/or brake pad play.
Not to mention that the Trans like to shift hard when cold.
Which, is what your symptom sounds like?

    I’m going with Normal.

Unless the truck literally jumps forward and the tires actually “roll”.
    That isn’t Normal.

BTW, The AC compressor comes on any time you are in a defrost setting.
Even if the AC is Off.

That's hilarious. I thought I was the only guy. I have the "lunge," as well as "someone tapping back bumper when stopped." Always makes me look in my rear view.

Yeah I didn’t know if I was or not and I thought I might as well jump on here and see if it’s normal before I take it back to the shop to get looked at and annoy the macanics lol

Yup happens to most of us. After about a month or two of driving, you'll adjust and keep your foot pushed down a little harder on the brake.

Mine will lunge on a cold start-up if I don't let the idle stabilize to normal, I have to have my foot on the brake when putting it in R or D.
Another time when it will lunge is if I know I'm going to be a long stop-light and I'll shift it into neutral and when I anticipate or see the light change to green I'll shift it back to drive,(D). Then when I step on the accelerator it's like a kick in the behind. It's like as I step on the accelerator there's nothing for a bit, then let's go. So I try to avoid neutraling it at stop-lights, something I know that doesn't need to be done anyhow.

That's what happens when you put a robust transmission and a torquey engine together. Mine does it too.

I have the tow package and I believe that little bump that occurs after braking on occasion comes from the hydraulic assisted brake booster. I swore that I got bumped in traffic though the lady behind me wasn't riding my butt nor did she have a frantic look on her face so I blew it off and checked for damage when I got home. No damage. With that said, I am overdue for a brake fluid change and new pads which I have been holding off until the weather warms up a bit more. So I'll step out on a limb and say that this is system normal, ops check good.
