They recently released a newer version that drains faster, but honestly speed of drain was not a concern of mine, that’s just extra beer drinking time

It wasn't the time that bothered me, I just felt like the faster the oil leaves the pan, the more particulates are going to flow with the oil. The longer the drain duration, the more crap gets left behind. This might be me being neurotic also, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

It is defiantly slower than normal. I would think that as long as you got the engine up to temp before draining the oil should be flowable enough and mixed up enough to negate any particulate matter settling out.

But you're right, it would never get hit. At least on most Toyota 4x4's it's right over or behind a frame crossmember. So barring significantly bending one almost in half it's extremely well protected.

Just fill it up with Kero, drive it around the block, and then drain that too!

Just kidding, this is a terrible, terrible idea. You could get away with it 40 years ago when everything had looser tolerances, but I definitely wouldn't want to try it on a modern engine or anything I cared about.

Edit- that being said, we used to sell an 'oil system flush' when I was working as a service writer, where we added about a pint of 'magic mystery fluid' to the customer's oil, ran it for about 5 minutes, and drained everything out. The MMF smelled like K1, and had about the same lubricity too. So probably adding a 1/2 pint would be ok, but definitely don't put 12 quarts in

With skid plates it shouldn't get it, without has a better chance but still not likely.
I have had a branch get caught in between my cross member which was hitting the oil pan when I didn't have skids...
No idea how I pulled that off but it does happen, my guess is it was from backing up.

Keep in mind, my oil changes are 13 quarts. I could likely deal with 'slower than normal' for a 5 quart change but I'm trying to move a lot of fluid and it's generally pretty soot loaded thanks to all the Al Gore systems on the truck.

Sort of is. My 150 with the 5.0 took 8 quarts, which I thought was a bit much also. I think the 6.2 was the best, it 'only' took 7 quarts of oil.

For me it's because I'm too cheap to spend $25 on a drain plug

Diesels in general, really. Cummins takes 12, a Duramax takes 10. They both seem like they take forever to drain.

I underestimated the volume on my first oil change. I was watching it fill up and was wondering if I had enough capacity in my drain pan. It got close! New drain pan is a 5 gallon bucket.

Once upon a time I used a rubber cork for my Suzuki motorcycle when I stripped it! Kept it for 40k miles or so.

The 5.7 in my truck is 7 quarts, and the 6.4 is 7 as well.

At least they're round numbers, instead of the stupid 5.5 quarts for my old Tacomas. And neither of them burned oil, so I never got to use that leftover half quart to top them off.

I only have a normal skid from Toyota right now, it's already a PITA. Fortunately my future skid has a cutout window for the filter.

I need to do the fumoto though. But most of my mess comes from the filter not the drain plug.

Exactly, and free.50 sounds like why the hell not to me.

The 3rd gen drain plug is downward so the thing would stick down too, not great if you don't have "real" skids (like I currently don't but soon will).

I don't mind if it takes a while to drain - I'd open 'er up, and then do the filter while it's draining. It's pretty much what I already do anyway :notsure: and I don't work for Toyota so I don't give a rip if there's still a drop or two of old oil in there, it's a drain and fill not a flush.
