I've got a 21 SR5 with the stock (non-TRD) grille. I'm thinking of modifying it by adding three very small color accents on the middle horizontal bar in the retro Toyota colors (red, orange and yellow). One option will just be to paint the accents on. Another option would be to very slightly recess the areas that will be painted, maybe by 1/8".

This raises a few of questions for me.
    1. What kind of paint should I use for such a project? I'm looking for something that I can get in VERY small quantities, since each of the accents will cover less than a square inch. Obviously it would also need to be durable, and if I go the recessed route, I would probably go with something glossy.
    2. If I go the recessed route, then I'll need to do some scoring and probably filing. I don't know anything about the material the stock grille is made of and how it will respond to filing, dremel-ing, or whatever. Has anyone attempted something like this and can you shed any light on what it's like to work the material?
    3. How thick is the material? I don't want to start filing the recesses and discover that it's fairly thin only after I file all the way through the front surface.
    4. If I recess the accents I may build them back up very slightly with some epoxy or something, so that the accents aren't just painted but also have some thickness to them, as well as to create a smooth surface. Any thoughts on what kind of epoxy I should use?
Here's a mockup of something like what I'm thinking (I'd probably also black out the chrome):

Not sure if this is applicable, but how about automotive wrap? I went to an automotive car wrap business and had the external grille shroud and several pieces wrapped. Clean install. It was actually their stuff that gave me the idea, but until you brought it up I didn't dig around much on their site. Their universal grille decals might be just the thing.

That's what I'm talking about. I would really love to recess and then build back up with epoxy or something, just to give the color accents some 3D quality, but I don't know if it will be worth the trouble. Where'd you get the decals and what's the process for making it line up correctly?

It’s a vinyl decal I bought on eBay and I’ve bought from the same person, it’s a good quality material. I started from the top and slowly folded it across the bends. It sits nice and flat. Folding it from the top down gives it a 3-d effect than laying it flat.
