I think everyone's opinion of "extreme" off-roading is vastly different. When I think extreme, do everything, off-roading out of the box, you gotta go Camel Trophy era Land Rover Defender......

I've driven alot of vehicles in my 50+ years, and I can't find a reason NOT to buy the Toyota. The reliability, resale value & versatility just can't be beat IMO......

To me that's a trail buggy. Off road to me means you can still drive it on road. lol

Depends on how steep of a hill you want to climb with the Toyota.

I think you mean “all of the millennial Instalanders realize their balls haven’t dropped yet and decide to replace their Subarus with whatever truck is popular on social media”.

I’d argue a Jeep or 3rd Gen 4Runner is more capable off road than a Taco, mostly due to approach angles. Jeeps and Yota’s have just been part of the off-road, crawling and mudding scene for a long time. It’s almost tradition nowadays haha.

Seriously tho, reliability has a lot to do with it.

My brother has a 2015 wrangler that went to AEV. 4" lift, 34's and armor all for less than 90k (including the Jeep)...no thanks. I don't know if that was a certain package or what, but it's all bolt on stuff. Stock axles and gears, too. It's nothing we couldn't have done in a weekend with hand tools but he wanted the warranty.

The Tacoma is popular because even the SR base model, with some All Terrains, has great ground clearance and approach angles. Couple with their good value and you simply see more trucks due to how many they sell.

The Colorado ZR2 is great, and beats up the TRD Pro and steals it's lunch money, but the regular range of Colorado's are milquetoast in comparison.

The Gladiator is also a much better off roader, but it's only an off roader. The Tacoma is ultimately much more comfortable on the road and can also do the job of being a truck better than the Gladiator. Also, going back to price, a Tacoma can be had for much cheaper than the Jeep, so you'll see more of them.

People like Tacomas because they're versatile. They can be a truck, a commuter and an Off Road vehicle. So you end up seeing more of them as a result.

They are all good trucks. Buy what you want. For extreme off roading that the OP is asking about -

Ford Ranger: Not much aftermarket support yet

Chevy Colorado: Mediocre approach angle (even with spoiler removed), stupid G80 "auto locker"

Toyota Tacoma: Reputation for durability, excellent articulation

    ...

Jeep Wrangler: makes them all look like minivans in the tough stuff

Are first replies like that a "thing" on this site? I've noticed a lot of them and it's really off-putting for the site as whole. As you can see I'm a new member. I wonder how many of that persons 180 posts are this kind of cr*p. If the point of this site isn't to talk about vehicles but rather just douchey comments like that person's input, I'm heading back over to the tele guitar forum and enjoying my new pickup on my own.

lol well being a resident TW squatter myself, I would say yes those types of replies are common place, but also to be taken with a grain of salt as a lot of us here are just busting balls and being sarcastic and not intentionally being dbag aholes

Trucks are mechanical devices and this means there is no special device that makes the Toyota a better off-road truck. Lockers, Tires, Lift, etc... are all available for the trucks you mentioned so Zr2 vs Taco vs Any Similar Machine they will be similar but one thing that absolutely stands out amongst all the mid-size trucks is Market Share and Re-sale Value.

I'm driving my 4th Tacoma and when I was a young man looking at my first NEW vehicle purchase I was giving serious thought to the S-10 (great looking truck at the time ~late 90's) as well as the V8 Dakota and after much deliberation I bought the Taco and I see tons like it still on the road, the S10 is almost totally non-existant and the ones I do see are total garbage that are worth nearly nothing same for the Dakota.

Truck pickup, whenever it eventually arrives for me to take delivery! I'm chomping at the bit for that, but likely gonna have to wait for next winter to enjoy it in the snow.

But now you have me thinking, maybe I need to track down another set of Fender 62AVRI pickups before they disappear. Let's hijack this thread, what are you playing these days? :D

Yeah I also figured this could be the case, but the first one, seemingly every time? haha the folks here are quick on that trigger!
