I was at Donner Lake/reno last october. I was in my FJ60 Land Cruiser. It was funny to see so many SF/LA people in their "4wd' just whizzing by me. You would see them spun out few miles down the road. As you said, people don't realize turn/stop 4wd/awd makes no difference :D

4WD actually does make you turn and stop better, due to the front and rear axles being locked together, but it's an incremental improvement (~10-20%), not magic.
It is better in deep snow. Same principle as in sand - increased footprint means you sink down less, and side lugs become traction lugs (on the more aggressive AT tires). Only thing to watch for is the valve core might stick in the depressed position due to ice, causing all the air to leak out.

    First Tacoma, but I've owned a 2003 WRX wagon, 2004 WRX STi, 2005 Forester 2.5XT, 2006 Legacy 2.5GT spec.B, 2008 Forester Sports 2.5XT, and a 2009 WRX STI hatchback. It was a phase... o_O

    ^this.

When I lived in Erie, PA, after the first snowfall, I would see several cars stuck in ditches on the side of the road. After a week or two, everyone would be acclimated to winter driving again. The problem here in SoCal is how infrequently it rains/snows (unless you live in the mountains), so everyone still drives in inclement weather like they do on dry pavement.
