Sleeping pad for bed platform

I've been searching high and low for a mattress pad for my bed platform that sits over the wheel wells.

Ideally I'd find something 72x52".

Everything I've found in that length is narrower (25-40")
Everything I've found in that width is longer (77-79")

I'm avoiding the memory foam route because of the lower R-value. Putting two pads together would work, but then person in the middle has to sleep over the crack.

Does anyone know of an off-the-shelf pad that would fit?

 

I've been rocking a fold-up memory foam mattress for a few years now, no complaints. I think all of wedge campers use memory foam mattresses too. I wouldn't get too hung up on the R value personally since you're not sleeping on the ground.

That said, I have been looking for something lower profile and more storeable, but haven't found anything perfect just yet. I do think the long and wide megamat (52x77.6) would work, it would probably just squish up when you close the tailgate.

 

I've also been rocking a queen-size folding memory foam mattress with my softopper for a while. Super comfortable to sleep, but my only complaint is how bulky the mattress is, even when folded up. I am about to purchase a Megamat for this very reason.

Deciding between the Duo 10 M (72"x40") and the Duo 10 LW+ (77"x52"). Wouldn't mind the extra width when I sleep with company but I'm not sure the extra 5" of length would be able to be squished up with the tailgate.

 

Forgot to mention that I cut the queen-size memory foam mattress down to 50" width...queen size won't quite fit in a long bed.

 

R value with memory foam is negligible. I have cheap foam in my popup, even with the wind blowing directly underneath my bed tray my butt doesn't get cold. Get the nearest larger size and cut to fit using a hot knife.

 

Maybe go w/the LW+ from REI or something and return if it doesn't fit? I think the bed measures about 73.5" too which helps.

 

Not a bad idea. I didn't know REI carried them. Just ordered an LW+ for curbside pickup...my store looks like it has both in stock so if I don't like the fit I can exchange it directly. I'll post pics of the length vs. tailgate for others

Got the Megamat duo 10 M for a DCSB... way better than my old air mattress.

 

Not sure if an air mattress is out of the question but if not, tacomabeast sells some that fit perfectly in the Tacoma bed. They have models for both long and short beds although the short bed ones are currently sold out.

Edit: I just realized you said that your bed platform is already over the wheel wells so this is probably not what your looking for.

 

I ordered some upholstery foam and cut it to size, and had some custom outdoor cushion covers made by on online supplier. Less then $500 cdn.

 

So...... did it work?

 

Quick update: so I ordered the LW+ from REI, but was told that only the M (72" long) was in stock after I showed up. I brought the M home last night but haven't yet inflated it. I plan to inflate it this weekend when the weather warms up a bit. Interestingly, I looked at the instructions and they recommend letting the mattress sit for up to 24 hours in a warmer environment during the initial inflation to let the foam expand fully.

I'll post pictures showing the width vs. the truck bed on my platform. I can also mickey mouse a test for your theory about squishing up any extra length with the tailgate and report back to the team. Until the weekend!

 

I cut a 3" memory foam topper to fit that I had lying around. I never feel like I'm losing heat out the bottom. You're not experiencing radiative heat loss out that way, as I think the the wood and carpet helps.
I'm thinking about having a custom made one from https://www.mattressinsider.com, get something thicker and more comfortable. 3" is just on the edge of being uncomfortable for me.

No one makes an off-the-shelf pad that will fit in a 5' short bed. I searched everywhere.

 

I just cut a 3" memory foam pad down to the size I needed and had my mom sew me a cover for it. Before we had the cover she made, we just wrapped it in a king size bed sheet.

OK so I got it inflated. First impressions: these Exped mats are very high quality and easy to inflate. Can't wait to use it and am looking forward to not having to bring along my bulky memory foam mattress ever again.

Again, this is a Megamat Duo 10 M. I paid $299+tax at REI. Fully inflated I measured 73"L x 41"W x 4"D. Centered on my platform in my long bed, I measured 6" free space to my Softopper clamps on each side (+/- 8" to the edge of the bed rails). The length is 100% snug up against the front of the bed and the closed tailgate.

It will probably feel a bit narrow when sleeping two, but definitely do-able. I wouldn't mind the extra 12" of width that comes with the Duo LW+, but it would probably rub against my Softopper clamps (probably not ideal). Also, I would not feel comfortable squishing the extra length of the LW+ by closing the tailgate--probably better to elevate the platform and rest the extra length on top of the tailgate rail.

I think the ideal size for full-coverage sleeping pads for those with long beds and shells/Softoppers would be something in the range of 72-73"L x 48-50"W. Could go a bit wider if you don't have to worry about clamps on the bed rails. If someone finds something, try it out and post it up here.

Just seeing this post now. Those mattresses look slick! However, you do lose the ability to stow stuff underneath a bed platform.

 

If you have a long bed the mega mat M fits perfectly between the wheel wells and front to back with the tailgate up. Its like it was made for the long bed Tacoma. I use mine under a softtopper with no platform.

 

Thanks for all the details! It looks like a pretty good fit. I really wish they made a wider one in that length. I feel like with two of us and a dog back there someone (me most likely) will be getting pushed off the side. It looks like a perfect fit on the length though so cramming an extra 4 inches probably isn't gonna fly.

Edit: Just found the sea to summit comfort plus double wide. It's 51"x72". Seems just about perfect.
