Downhill rigs definitely have their place in cycling. Fun is the name of the game and you have to find the
right price point for your skills and desire on two wheels. Can downhill bikes make bombing down mountains
easier?? Absolutely!!! But isn't bombing down a mountain on any bike fun? Hell yeah. I've bombed down mountains
on pretty much anything with two wheels. All fun to me.

Just did a retro simplicity build. Used a donor bike I wasn't riding that much for half of the parts, bought a 2006 GT Avalanche 1.0 disc frame for $60 and a few more parts to complete it. 1x9 rigid hardtail setup with Deore outboard bearing cranks, Gates pedals, Kore seatpost/bars, Oury lock-ons, WTB Pure Race seat, Alivio rapidfire shifter and rr der - (because on hand), rigid carbon MTB fork, 26/27.5" staggered matching Deore disc wheelset/Nobby Nic 2.35s, 34t oval narrow wide chainring with 11/32 cassette & avid bb7 mech discs/LX servo wave levers. Have always wanted GT hardtail because I like the the frame geometry...............and just christened it in the snow in SE TX on it's maiden voyage Monday morning when it was snowy and not so icy.

Still waiting on seatpost clamp to get here from Taiwan...............

    GT_sp_clmp.jpg

A break from all the brand new high tech $5000+ bikes posted up nowadays and fills a niche in my stable. Only geared, rigid offroad bike I have. Donor was weird single speed flared drop bar offroad crazy thing that was comical but not very useful......

    Seatpost clamp on and done......

I've taken the dog for a "turbo walk" around the block a few times. Right as I finished it is when the weather started rolling in finally. I had 9 inches of snow in my yard last week.

I wanna hear your thoughts on the tires. I have freaking loved mine, but I’m running martello rear.

These are great frame geometries! I have an ancient Zaskar with an old school Judy and V-Brakes. After I got my DV9, I decided to resurrect it for a ride. It's still a lot of fun but sure points out the smoothness the 29" wheels bring to the party (on the DV9).

All the years I have had a mountain bike, i have only ridden it along beach bike paths. It is a 2008 Paketa magnesium frame hardtail with Sram xo groupset, DT Swiss wheels and Continental ProTection Race Kings in 26x2.2.

My big mistake was trying to keep pace with my buddy who is experienced instead of going at a newbie pace. Slid off to the side and came to an abrupt stop with my shoulder against a boulder sticking out of the side bank. I think the shoulder stopped my head from meeting the damn rock. I was able to walk away with some road rash on my arms and my knees all cut up and bleeding all the way down the trail. I was told this was a great beginner trail but I got ambitious and stupid.

Anywho, the clip of the wipeout.

That's why I went with the staggered wheelset with 26" and 27.5" up front & fork that does 27.5 or 29" wheel on the GT. I do agree about diggin some 29" wheels. The Giant AnthemX 29er and my Trek Stache 7 get a lot more play than my 26ers do but they all get turns eventually.............I still have a 1995 Trek Y22 carbon that gets a spin now and then but it pales in comparison to the AnthemX............

Pivot Mach 4 SL, waiting for these trails to melt out. By far the fastest xc bike I've owned. You can get yourself into trouble very quick

29ers blow my mind. although I don't know if they work with smaller frames. My bike is 16" seat tube. when did they come out and why

edit: not trying to retrofit my frame,
just asking if they are feasable
for someone whith short legs like me

if your bike came with 26" wheels, it most likely wont work with any other size wheel, especially if the bike is more than a few years old. I don't think any bike is made to work with both wheel sizes. At least not without significant changes to the components.

@jon_elc I've got a fat bike with 26" wheels that will also take a 29 or 27.5. That being said, generally they are specific to the frame. Pivot makes some smaller 29er frames, but they are spendy. I suspect there are other options out there. Ibis makes a nice 29er hardtail too. If you are in a bike friendly city you might be able to rent one to try it out.
