Widened my personal flatbed trailer over the past two day and built drive over fenders. Actually took more work/time than I was thinking it would. Roughly 54 square tubes and 6 tube caps. Fenders will get plated with diamond plate in the future and the rest left open so I can still have access to my stake pockets 75F1CE4B-00B6-47B7-B1D8-323560974648.jpg6354A59B-6BBA-4700-9535-20937EC8E4B4.jpg24FE2935-269B-4D0A-A5C7-969A489E268D.jpg

to all the bumper guru's and those who have more common sense and real world experience then I do, I ask for your input ( or anyone's input really :) )

I'm at the point where I have to tack things up on my bumper build, but I'm wondering about the recovery points, See below

    Front Recovery_1.jpg

They don't go all the way through, they are just 3/4" thick and welded to the surface of the bumper which is 3/16".
is that sufficient? or should / would it be better to extend those recovery points and weld along the inside plate of the bumper, See below. ( red is the mount extended along the side plate which happens to be 1/4" thick. The green is where I would weld it.
    Front Recovery_3.jpg

    so to go from this....
    Front Recovery_4.jpg
    to this.....
    Front Recovery_5.jpg

I don't have any of these recovery points cut yet, so now is the time for me to decide on what I want to do.

    **Edit**
I can imagine I would use this to winch off of ( snatch block or something ) or possibly use to yank some one out of some where. I do have a bolt in recovery point on the lower bar opposite the factory tie down if my two options above are not good.
    thank you for your time.

I like your thinking, I wouldn't trust them. I know a certain short hand for emergency company uses plates that go through and are part of the mount to the frame.

Haha thanks man. Yeah, this cart will definitely help lugging around gear. Milk crates full of fittings, pipe, sand bags, apple boxes, etc...

haha I imagine a super low profile cart would be great for the Co2 tanks haha

You are fine surface welding as long as you are confident in your penetration. Unless you are using extra, extra long web strap recovery equipment, there is little need to worry.

I just never saw the need for welding 3/4" or bigger hard points to 3/16" or 1/4" steel .

Over the years I used 3/8" or 1/2" what I had handy I only ever had one bend that was a 90 Degree pull with a chain and it took several Yanks to bend things.

I only saw The Aftermath not sure if I ever got the complete truth .

Extending them and being able to weld more surface area is always better. This is how the majority of major manufacturers do their recovery points. But I’m sure it would be fine for surface welding as long as you’re running 240 and know how to get serious material penetration. If you are skeptical on your abilities probably best to expend them to get more weld surface area

    Thanks Everyone for commenting,
I should have mentioned that I'm running a 120v Lincoln Migpack 140 setup for MIG with .030 wire, where as I don't have formal training I think I'll run them through to get more surface area.

The bed rack is nearly done...

First coat of paint curing, and will be doing the second coat and some touch up in spots I missed this week.

Will be going on the truck on my next off hitch. And the roof top tent is scheduled for delivery Tuesday. And a shakedown trip with it all at the end of the month.

Tick tock.. tick tock.. nothing like a hard deadline to move a project along

Latest project. Wanted somewhere for our spoiled dogs to be comfortable while out exploring..., and some dust free storage for whatever else we are bringing.
