In my head I assumed that the first time I go to engage 4wd should probably not be when I’m being hard on the truck because I’m actually using the 4wd capability.

I thought a couple miles here and there would be better for it to help break in the new gears

I don't think pavement was the issue at hand unless, as previously stated, you were taking sharp turns. Which you likely would have felt the resistance through the tires before something mechanical broke.

I think it was probably something else. There was a guy in the first gen section the other day that had significantly different sized tires front and rear, and when he ran it in 4wd the input shaft to the front diff popped. It took a surprisingly long time for that to happen. If you're just throwing it in 4 on mostly straight roads on occasion, there's no reason it should blow up. Something was actually wrong here.

I remember back when some shop in Cali did a group buy of gears, something like front and rear installed 1500 or some cheap price. Mixed up a few diffs and put mixed 4.88 with 5.29s, or stock front gears with 4.88/5.29s rear and caused all kinds of havok.

No it was a straight line. All the way to the restaurant would have been a straight line. My plan was to put it in 2wd before I got there and had to make any turns

Well I drove all of like a few hundred feet before it stopped. Would have been probably 1.5-2 miles to where I was going. Also the tires are 3 weeks old.

You driving in 4hi in a straight line on pavement had nothing to do with causing this failure.

This is how I felt too. I think if this were the case, people who don’t know any better would accidentally be blowing up there trucks

Yeah let’s put that theory to bed. Obviously that’s not the reason for this failure.

I agree if he was straight should be "ok". But I would delete this post. Tell them you hit a dirt road near your house just to get some turns on the front, made it about 100ft, bang. Truck seized up. Took a bit to get back to 2hi. Then drove home.
Again its the internet. Delete this thread.

Seems like the fluids drained themselves ;)

And what’s he supposed to say else? That this happened in 2wd? Or lie about the whole thing? Nah, if they wanna blame him they’ll blame him anyway

That and they seemed like a good shop. Mistakes happen. Or the gears could have been bad.

And risk the shop screwing this guy over on some BS reason if they see this thread? That be some chucking of integrity too, don't you think? He's not compromising his morals, merely simplifying his problem. If what he says on here is true, I see nothing wrong with the suggestion.

I'm leaning to a gearing issue. Did you check to see if the front diff is leaking. Many times I have seen fluids on the under side of a vehicle come from a component in the front only to show up towards the rear. The fluid will get pushed/splashed back while driving. Also check the 4WD actuator make sure it has its connections in place. Good luck.

Please keep us informed on the process.
